Information about this children’s home
This children’s home was judged to have declined in effectiveness at the interim inspection on 12 December 2018 and a notice restricting accommodation was served to prevent any further young people being admitted to the home. The purpose of this visit was to review compliance with the restriction and to consider progress in respect of the requirements which were set at the last inspection. The provider has complied with the restriction notice. No further young people have been admitted to the home. One young person continues to live in the home. The registered manager has developed a monitoring tool to assist her in reviewing and monitoring the home. She has also undertaken an investigation into the concerns that were raised at the last inspection. She has used this learning to develop and improve the experience and care provided to young people. Robust action has been taken to address issues of concern and all previous requirements

have been met. Risk assessments have now been reviewed and updated to include the risk of young people smoking in their bedrooms. They contain sufficient detail to guide staff in how to manage this risk. A comprehensive fire audit has also been undertaken. All staff are now up to date with safeguarding training. Staff are now aware of the process to follow should a young person make a disclosure. The registered manager has undertaken workshops with staff to ensure that they are fully aware of the process and that they understand their responsibilities in regard to notifying the Inspection report for children’s home - monitoring visit: SC020607 2 relevant authorities. Staff have undertaken extensive key-work sessions with the young person. They have liaised with the in-house therapist and have used strategies which she has suggested to successfully engage the young person. Because of these efforts, the

young person is now receiving appropriate support around smoking cessation and other health-related needs. Staff use a variety of materials to support these sessions including books and pictures. Staff provide the young person with support to manage her behaviour. This is achieved by staff being clear about what is safe and acceptable. Staff strive to understand the triggers for behaviour to enable them to meet the young person’s needs effectively. A social worker told the inspector, ‘Staff know [name of young person] really well, they know what works and how do it.’ Staff have positive and warm relationships with the young person. They are also supporting her to develop positive relationships with other young people. Staff encourage the young person to spend time in the community with her friends and to have friends visit her in the home. Because of these opportunities, the young person is beginning to understand what makes a healthy relationship. Staff have undertaken

key-work sessions to support the young person’s understanding of exploitative and damaging relationships.
