p.1

This provision is good

n Children are safe and secure, and have good relationships with the childminder. Partnerships with parents are effective. Parents appreciate the weekly emails they receive with details about the menu and activities. Children grow vegetables in the garden and learn about healthy eating. They comment that they like tea time, when they make their own pizzas and choose what toppings to put on. n The childminder supports children to develop high levels of confidence in social situations. Children take part in art classes to develop their understanding of the arts and to learn new skills. Families are encouraged to join the 'street play day' when the road is closed to cars, enabling children and families to play together outside. n The childminder provides a highly stimulating environment where children make good progress. She offers a range of demanding and interesting resources. Activities are challenging for children of all ages. This is evident when the childminder teaches

children about first aid following her paediatric first-aid course. Children are encouraged to practise the recovery position and apply different types of bandages for various injuries. n The childminder provides opportunities for children to learn about people and communities beyond their immediate experience. For example, they concentrated well as they listened to information about Chinese New Year and were fully engaged in cutting out and designing their own 'good fortune' game. Children are active learners. n Partnerships with other providers who care for children are not securely established to develop consistency in learning. n The childminder does not focus her self-evaluation sharply enough on the quality of her teaching so as to develop and extend her practice further, based on the children's needs.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

n develop systems to strengthen links with all other providers to ensure continuity in children's learning and development n develop self-evaluation further to focus more sharply on identifying key areas of development to target for further improvement.

Inspection activities n The inspector took a tour of the premises used for childminding, and checked them for safety. n The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder and evaluated the quality of teaching and learning. n The inspector viewed a range of documents, including training certificates and policies. She checked evidence of the suitability of the childminder and all persons living in the household. n The inspector observed the interactions between the childminder and children. n The inspector took into account the written views of parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good knowledge of how to protect children. She is confident with the procedures to follow should she have any concerns about children's welfare. The childminder keeps her mandatory training up to date. Her effective policies and procedures contribute to meeting the needs of the children in her care. For example, she takes photographs of the children before they leave to go on trips so that she has a record of what they are wearing in the case of an emergency. Although the childminder has ideas about some areas to develop, she does not have a clear self- evaluation in place which includes the views of parents and children. The childminder attends network meetings with the local authority and meets with other childminders to share information and ideas. She uses risk assessments effectively to consider the safety of the environment both in the home and off-site. She researches information to ensure

that her knowledge of health and safety is up to date. For instance, she updates her policy regarding plug covers.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has high expectations of all children. She carries out regular assessments based on her good understanding of the early years foundation stage. She regularly shares information with parents to help promote children's learning at school and at home. The childminder knows the children well and, as a result, they are enthusiastic and inspired to learn. She encourages them to work together collaboratively. This enables children to remain engaged and motivated, particularly in areas they feel less confident with, for example when completing mathematics homework set by the school. Children have good communication and language skills. They develop their mathematical and literacy skills through activities and the daily routine. For instance, they delight in making hand puzzles. They take turns to count the numbers and read out the responses to each other.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are outstanding

The childminder provides a highly stimulating environment with a wide range of activities. She places an exceptionally high priority on children developing their understanding of being healthy. Their well-being is significantly enhanced through various activities and events the childminder plans. Children show this when they learn about how to keep their teeth healthy. They try the plaque-disclosing tablet after cleaning their teeth and see where they still have plaque. Children are physically active. They have a range of opportunities to develop and explore their increasing physical abilities and learn to manage risks and challenges safely. They demonstrate high levels of independence and self-confidence. They enjoy spending time outdoors at local parks and playgrounds. For example, they take part in yoga lessons in the garden. The childminder is a good role model. Children demonstrate exceptionally positive behaviour

and concern for others. They support their peers who are new to the setting to help them settle quickly. The childminder gathers information about children's specific care needs before they start. She visits them at their home to help build strong relationships. This ensures that all children are emotionally well prepared for the next stage in their learning, and helps parents support children in their home learning and development.
