p.2

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: outstanding

This children’s home is judged outstanding because it provides exceptional care and support to vulnerable children who have highly complex needs. It helps them to start a journey to achieving a better quality of life, to be safer and to improve their life chances.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: outstanding

The registered manager and her team have expertise in supporting children who have experienced a multiple placement breakdown because of their serious risk-taking behaviours. The registered manager and the staff team take the lead and work effectively with other professionals to improve the child’s experiences and progress. They help children to achieve stability and to reduce the level of harmful behaviours.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: outstanding

For the first time in their care experiences, children enjoy meaningful and trusting relationships with staff. They learn to share their thoughts and feelings and they develop trust in staff. Children confide in staff and on occasions have shared significant information that could otherwise have led to the child being harmed. The current child said she feels that it is an ‘outstanding’ home and wants to live here until she is 18. She feels that the manager and staff provide her with consistency, care and the help that others have been unable to provide her with in the past.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: outstanding

Children are helped to develop their self-esteem and confidence. Their views are heard, and they are included in important decision-making. Children are encouraged to attend professional meetings where their needs are discussed, and they have a say in planning their own care. In addition, children are involved in the selection of new staff. Where appropriate, the manager advocates on behalf of the children in their care, to ensure that they are listened to and that their rights are observed. As a result, children start to feel empowered and involved, and they begin to develop self-worth and resilience.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: outstanding

The manager and staff team ‘go the extra mile’ to facilitate positive relationships between children and their families. They help children to re-build their relationships with their families and to enjoy time with them. The staff team works with parents to help them to respond to their children in a way that is consistent with clinical advice and with how the staff team responds to them. Staff help parents to develop a better understanding of their child, and they help to improve parents’ ability to manage their child’s behaviour.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: outstanding

The registered manager includes school staff in relevant training and clinical support in areas such as self-harm, which has been beneficial in forging close relationships with school staff and in embedding good practice. The staff team works creatively in partnership with the school to achieve the best possible outcomes for the child.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

The manager and staff are highly skilled in achieving a careful balance between keeping children safe and allowing them to take some carefully assessed risks. This positive risk- Inspection report children’s home: SC457567 4 taking approach, agreed by a team of professionals, helps the child to learn to take greater responsibility for their actions.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Staff respond to incidents in a carefully considered and consistent way, as outlined in emergency and safety plans. Following every incident, time is spent with the child, reflecting on what has happened and what they could have done differently. The manager and staff seek to provide the child with whatever help and support that they can to help the child to make better decisions. However, in one instance, the expectations set out in the safety plan were unrealistic in terms of the child’s age and proved to be unachievable.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

The manager and staff team reflect on their own responses to difficult situations. They learn from incidents that occur and constantly seek to improve their practice. All records are thorough and of a high standard. Information is appropriately shared with the child’s social worker and other professionals in a timely way, so that appropriate action can be taken.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

The staff team develops an understanding of ways in which the child’s past experiences continue to affect them. As a result, staff do not use physical restraint to manage incidents. The staff team manages the child’s behaviour positively through creative use of incentives and rewards.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Care planning is carefully devised using detailed information. Any trends and patterns in the child’s behaviour are scrutinised. This intelligence is shared with other professionals and is used in future decision-making and planning for the child’s care.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: outstanding

The registered manager is an exceptional leader. Without exception, children, staff and external professionals are complimentary about her ability to lead the home. The manager is tenacious and creates a culture of positivity and high expectations. She is ambitious for the children and for the staff.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: outstanding

The registered manager is an excellent role model and demonstrates the ability to nurture talent in her staff team. Under her leadership, staff develop their confidence and skills, and many have succeeded in achieving promotion within the company. Historically, three members of her team have become registered managers.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: outstanding

The manager has a senior practitioner role within the company. She has used this opportunity to make improvements and disseminate good practice across the region, for example, in how to manage children’s behaviour positively and how to place more emphasis on staff well-being and their personal development. Excellent use is also made of research; the manager and her team are creative in their thinking. For example, as a result of training and research in positive reinforcement, the manager introduced a system of instant recognition rewards for children. These rewards have helped children to feel valued and are successful in promoting positive behaviour. The registered manager and the staff team are constantly seeking new ideas and approaches that will Inspection report children’s home: SC457567 5 benefit the child in their care.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: outstanding

The manager has a level 5 diploma in leadership and management of residential childcare. Six staff members have achieved their level 3 and two are working towards it, with an envisaged completion date well within expected timescales. Staff enjoy working with the registered manager. They feel valued and stimulated by working in such a positive team. Training is given a high priority. Mandatory training is up to date. A valuable range of bespoke training is sourced and provided. This includes mental health, first aid and self-harm training, tailored around the needs of the child. Excellent use is also made of the company’s clinician who contributes to the team providing very personalised and considered care.

Information about this inspection

Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children and young people. Inspectors considered the quality of work and the differences made to the lives of children and young people. They watched how professional staff work with children and young people and each other and discussed the effectiveness of help and care provided. Wherever possible, they talked to children and young people and their families. In addition, the inspectors have tried to understand what the children’s home knows about how well it is performing, how well it is doing and what difference it is making for the children and young people whom it is trying to help, protect and look after.
