Recommendations

 (Specifically relating to information sharing with external agencies following a significant event.) The home’s record of the event must include a description of the action taken and the outcome of any resulting investigation. (‘Guide to the children’s homes regulations including the quality standards’, page 63, paragraph 14.14)

p.3

Recommendations

 Staff must help each child to prepare for any moves from the home, whether they are returning home, moving to another placement or adult care, or to live independently. This includes supporting the child to develop emotional and mental resilience to cope without the home’s support and, where the child is moving to live independently, practical skills such as cooking, housework, budgeting and personal self-care. This support should be clearly detailed in the child’s internal placement plan and be regularly reviewed. (‘Guide to the children’s homes regulations including the quality standards’, page 17, paragraph 3.27)

p.3

Recommendations

 The registered person should ensure that staff continually and actively assess the risks to each child and make sure that the plans in place to manage these risks are clear. (‘Guide to the children’s homes regulations including the quality standards’, page 42, paragraph 9.5) Inspection report children’s home: SC415710 4

p.3

Young people themselves recognise their positive progress and speak highly of staff. They describe warm and trusted relationships, and confirm that they feel safe and comfortable in their home. One young person said, ‘The staff are the best. They don’t just leave you if you are upset. They come to see you and try to cheer you up. One day when I was upset in my room, they brought me a hot chocolate. They are all really kind and nice.’

p.4

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

All the young people have full-time education placements and have improved their engagement in education since their admission. Staff understand the barriers that some young people face in accessing education. They work effectively with school staff to ensure that young people have the necessary support to achieve their potential.

p.4

One young person is reaching the age of independence. The registered manager has worked closely with external professionals to ensure that planning for this process begins in good time to ensure that she is well prepared. The young person is being supported to develop her independence skills within the home. However, the plans in relation to this support, and her progress, could be more detailed to help to ensure that staff are supporting her in a consistent manner.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Young people are well cared for in a safe environment. They express confidence in the staff and confirm that they are able to share any worries or concerns that they have. One young person described a recent incident at school which she felt the registered manager dealt with very well. She said, ‘That made me feel safe. Like she’s ‘got our back’ all the time.’

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Staff are skilled in understanding young people’s behaviours and emotional responses. Records demonstrate that staff are able to de-escalate most heightened situations, which means that the numbers of incidents requiring physical intervention are low. This positive and consistent support helps young people to develop safer behaviours over time.
