This provision is good

n The childminder is consistent in his approach to behaviour management. He teaches children the importance of sharing and of taking turns. Children behave well. n The childminder works well with parents, and he gathers their views and thoughts on his practice. Recent suggestions from parents were to increase the outings children went on. The childminder now takes children to local play areas, woods and museums. This helps children to learn about the wider world they live in, which helps to support good continuity of learning for children. n The childminder keeps up to date with any changes to legislation helping him to keep children safe. n Tracking of children's learning is not as accurate as it can be. The childminder does not consistently record children's ages and the stages of learning they have reached, resulting in tracking that does not always highlight children's next steps of learning. n At times, the childminder does not fully support younger children's language

development. Although he talks to children as they play, resources to help enhance this area of learning are not readily available for children to self-select.

Inspection activities n The inspector observed children in the main play area. n The inspector spoke with the childminder at appropriate times during the inspection. n The inspector sampled documents, including safeguarding and children's files. n The inspector took into account the views of the parents. n The inspector discussed with the childminder how he maintains good practice.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder is fully aware of his role in keeping children safe. He works with the local schools to share details of any previous accidents so that they are all kept informed to keep children safe. He understands the requirements to notify Ofsted of any changes to his suitability. The childminder reviews his practice and works with the local authority to make positive changes. Recent training has helped the childminder to support older children's literacy development, helping them to learn letter sounds.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder works closely with parents to find out what stages of learning the children are at when they first start in his care. He uses this information to successfully plan good-quality activities that help children to progress with their learning and development. He teaches younger children how to use toys that have cause and effect. For example, they thoroughly enjoyed learning how to play the toy guitars. The childminder showed them how to work the toy. Children eagerly watched and tried it themselves. They were excited when they pressed the buttons to make music and the lights flashed. The childminder matched the children's excitement with praise, and talked through what had happened. This helps younger children to develop their natural curiosity about how things work and why.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children settle extremely quickly into the care of the childminder. They develop a close bond with the childminder, who gives cuddles of reassurance to children, enabling them to feel secure. They are then ready to go and explore the activities. This helps to support children's self-esteem and confidence in trying new activities and experiences. The childminder works closely with parents so that he can follow children's routines. This helps to support children's well-being. Children learn how to move their bodies in new ways. They learn how to control their bodies in order to manoeuvre onto the child-sized chairs. This helps to support their physical development.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are ready for the next stage of their learning and subsequent move to school. Babies learn how to feed themselves and how to open their own water bottles in order to drink. This supports their physical development well. Older children enjoy developing their imagination during art activities, enhancing their literacy and creative development. They learn how to use scissors to cut out shapes, which also supports their physical skills.
