Inspection activities n The inspector viewed the areas used for childminding. She talked to the childminder at appropriate times throughout the inspection and observed a variety of activities. n The inspector looked at evidence of the suitability and qualifications of the childminder, as well as a selection of policies and procedures, including safeguarding. n The inspector carried out a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder. She discussed children's learning and development and sampled their records. n The inspector took account of the views of a parent spoken to on the day, and read a number of parent's comments in letters obtained by the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a secure understanding of how to recognise if a child may be at risk of harm and the process to follow if she has a concern. She tracks children's progress closely and identifies any gaps in their learning, so that these can be quickly addressed. Overall, the childminder reflects on and evaluates her practice well. For example, she has developed more ways to involve parents in their children's learning. This has helped to provide more opportunities for children to learn and develop with the childminder and in their home.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder observes children in their play and recognises their interests and achievements. She supports children's learning well and builds on existing skills to enhance their play. For example, younger children enjoyed the sensory experience when they played with dry oats by filling up small containers, helping to develop their hand-to- eye coordination. The childminder supports children's developing speaking skills well. For example, she sings familiar nursery rhymes with younger children who excitedly join in with the words and actions. The childminder is always close by to provide support, to help children's development further. For instance, younger children are proud as they start to stand alone and practise walking with the childminder's support.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is calm and caring. She is sensitive to the needs of all children in her care and supports their emotional security. For example, she gives younger children lots of cuddles when they are upset. Children enjoy physical exercise and fresh air daily. They are provided with a range of nutritious snacks, such as fresh fruit. This helps them to develop an understanding of healthy lifestyles. They are learning about the diversity of the world they live in through carefully planned and meaningful activities. For instance, they enjoy tasting different foods from around the world.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in relation to their starting points. They are consistently working well within the typical range of development expected for their ages. They are developing a range of skills and knowledge in preparation for their next stage in learning and eventual move to school. For example, children learn to be sociable as they meet with other children and adults on outings to local parks and groups.
