Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This is a provision that requires improvement

n The childminder has not renewed her paediatric first-aid training as required. She also does not ensure all records are accessible or available for inspection. These breaches of requirements also apply to the Childcare register. n The quality of the childminder's teaching is variable. Her interactions with the children do not consistently support their learning and development. n The childminder does not complete accurate assessments of children's development. She does not focus precisely enough on the next steps of their learning. As a result, children do not make the best possible progress from their starting points. n The childminder does not focus enough on her own professional development or have an accurate overview of her teaching and assessment. Furthermore, she does not reflect well enough on the service she provides to maintain requirements and improve outcomes for children.

p.1

It has the following strengths

n Children demonstrate that they feel happy, safe and secure in the care of the childminder. They develop close bonds with the childminder and regularly invite her into their play. n The childminder develops positive partnerships with parents. She regularly shares and exchanges information with them to support children's continuity of care.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

n develop reflection methods further to identify and address all areas of weakness, to improve ways to raise the quality of teaching and assessment and the overall standard of the provision.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. n The inspector and the childminder jointly evaluated an activity together. n The inspector held discussions with the childminder and the children during the inspection. n The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as evidence of the suitability of those living on the premises and of the qualifications of the childminder. n The inspector took account of the written views of parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder does not have an accurate overview of her practice and fails to identify weaknesses. She does not evaluate the impact of her teaching and assessment on children's learning. The childminder has not maintained her paediatric first-aid training. However, she has given sufficient consideration to how she will deal with any accidents or injuries while she is waiting to attend first-aid training. Some records are not accessible for inspection. However, the childminder does have the information she needs should she be required to deal with an emergency situation regarding a child. Overall, children's welfare is not significantly compromised. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder knows the procedures she must follow should she have a concern about a child's welfare. She has completed recent child protection training. This helps her to keep her knowledge updated about the wider aspects of safeguarding procedures. The

childminder supervises children closely. Parents' written comments about the care their children receive are positive.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

Although the childminder is well qualified, the quality of her teaching and interaction with children is variable. Her assessments of children's progress are too broad and do not precisely target what the children need to learn next. At times, the childminder does not quickly adapt her teaching to support individual children well enough, to help them learn as much as possible. She does not always positively interact with children during daily routines and activities to enhance their learning further. That said, during some planned activities the childminder interacts purposefully with the children. She repeats words clearly and introduces new words and sounds. Children copy the words and make the sounds that dinosaurs and cats make. Overall, this means that children's communication and language development is supported well.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Weaknesses in leadership and management and teaching and assessment impact on children's welfare and learning. For example, the childminder has identified toilet training as a next step for children. She does not engage and encourage the children to 'have a go', such as during nappy changing routines. Children's behaviour is good. The childminder praises children on their achievements and for following simple instructions. This helps to raise children's self-esteem and confidence. Children learn to take turns in their play to help to develop their social skills. Children benefit from a healthy life style. The childminder regularly takes children out to the park and on walks to help them learn about nature and enjoy the fresh air and exercise.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Teaching and assessment is not sufficiently well focused to help every child to reach their full potential. That said, children develop some skills needed for their next stages of learning. Children select toys of their choice. They also show some good levels of concentration for their age and ability during some of their play. Children make marks and use tools during a dough activity to support their physical and early writing skills.
