This home was judged good at the last full inspection. At the interim inspection, Ofsted judges that it has improved effectiveness.

p.1

and young people since the most recent full inspection

Two children continue to live at the home. They are both settled, happy and are being well supported to maintain good educational attendance and attainment. The children are engaging in positive activities in the community. One child has achieved awards for his contribution to voluntary work projects. This is highly positive progress and has helped him to build confidence in social situations and has raised his self-esteem. Inspection report children’s home: SC064050 2 One child is being supported to prepare for adulthood. He has been offered an apprenticeship and is currently exploring all options available to him. This is excellent progress.

p.1

and young people since the most recent full inspection

Behaviour in the home has improved. One social worker said: ‘[Name of child] has definitely made progress there. They manage him really well and do a brilliant job.’ Incidents of challenging behaviour or children being missing from the home are rare. When they do occur, the response from the staff team is well coordinated.

p.2

and young people since the most recent full inspection

On one occasion, a child was missing from the home with some enhanced concerns about the risk of exploitation. The manager had a conversation with the regulator, but formal notification was not made. A recommendation is made to formalise these discussions in the future to ensure that appropriate external scrutiny is afforded in such circumstances.

p.2

and young people since the most recent full inspection

There have been three allegations made against members of staff since the last inspection. All of them were immediately notified to external agencies and were managed sensitively and appropriately. A local authority’s designated officer said: ‘[Name of manager] has contacted me when concerns have arisen, we have been able to discuss them, and appropriate referrals have been made. She has attended meetings and implemented recommendations.’

p.2

and young people since the most recent full inspection

The registered manager continues to work on building a stable and consistent team and some progress has been made in this area. The recommendation from the last inspection to improve the homeliness of the environment by ensuring that there are sufficient dining chairs has been met.

p.2

and young people since the most recent full inspection

One member of staff is still yet to complete attachment training which is relevant to the needs of one of the children. The training is planned for February 2019. The recommendation made at the last inspection is therefore repeated.

(‘Guide to the children’s homes regulations including the quality standards’, page 63, paragraph 14.10)

Information about this inspection

Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children and young people. Inspectors considered the quality of work and the differences made to the lives of children and young people. They watched how professional staff work with children and young people and each other and discussed the effectiveness of help and care provided. Wherever possible, they talked to children and young people and their families. In addition, the inspectors have tried to understand what the children’s home knows about how well it is performing, how well it is doing and what difference it is making for the children and young people whom it is trying to help, protect and look after.
