Outcomes for children Requires improvement
p.1
This is a provision that requires improvement
n The childminder is not consistent in how she interacts with the children attending. She does not have clear learning aims for planned activities. Younger children do not engage well enough and do not make good enough progress in relation to their capabilities. However, when the childminder initiates more-interesting play ideas, younger children's motivation to join in and play alongside others improves. n Although the childminder understands the importance of observational assessment to determine the quality of children's learning, she has not completed the required progress check for all children aged two years. n The childminder does not display the certificate of registration, as required. n The childminder does not give clear enough messages to older children about how to keep themselves healthy, particularly during cooking activities. This means children do not understand enough about healthy eating.
p.1
It has the following strengths
n Overall, the childminder uses her policies, procedures and risk assessments to effectively support children's safety and well-being. n Children behave very well. The childminder has high expectations for children's behaviour and is consistent in how she promotes this. p.2
Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement
The childminder has a sound understanding of her role, but is in breach of some requirements of the early years foundation stage. For example, she does not display her certificate of registration. She does, however, provide parents with information of her registration. The childminder makes strides to improve her knowledge and skills, for instance through regular training and through membership of professional childcare associations. For example, she has completed training that enhances her awareness of promoting equality and diversity to support her planning for children's individual needs. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good overall understanding of all safeguarding matters and knows how to protect the children in her care. She evaluates her provision of care to assess the quality of her practice. She has established effective partnerships with parents and values their opinions.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement
The childminder does not engage with children well enough to enhance their learning and development. For example, she does not have clear aims for her activities and children's next steps in learning. The quality of her teaching, particularly with the younger children, is not good enough. For instance, the childminder does not build on children's developing language. She is not confident to play alongside children as they explore technological and electronic toys. Consequently, children become disengaged quickly. The childminder has not completed the required assessment for one child aged two years, although she is aware this should be in place to ensure any gaps in learning can be identified. Nevertheless, the childminder does take time to find out from parents what children can already do on entry to her setting. She also makes focused observations of children's achievements. These are shared regularly with parents, who
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement
The childminder encourages children to learn respect for others. For example, she helps them understand about sharing and turn taking. The childminder is keen to promote baking activities with the older children. For instance, children help her make pancakes, which they all eat together as a snack. However, the childminder does not talk about handwashing routines. She does not explain the benefits of healthy eating to children, particularly when without effective supervision they add too much sugar to the pancakes. Nevertheless, she does help children to understand the importance of eating the main part of their lunch prior to desserts.
p.3
Outcomes for children require improvement
Overall, children benefit from a range of toys that promote learning. For example, children enjoy pretend and imaginary play with dolls and toy figures. They 'bathe' and 'feed' dolls, and play contently alongside each other in role-play shopping experiences. This play supports their growing engagement and understanding of the wider world and real-life experiences. Children show interest in books and hearing stories. These activities promote children's understanding of language and their emerging interest in literacy. Children make sound progress and show readiness to learn more.
