Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This is a provision that requires improvement

n The childminder does not manage children's behaviour appropriately for their individual needs. n The childminder does not ensure that all prime areas are planned for together with children's next steps in learning. n The childminder does not organise planned activities to fully engage children during some parts of the day. n The childminder does not gather all children's starting points on entry, or monitor some children's ongoing progress effectively. n The childminder does not consistently make use of all opportunities to support children to manage their personal care needs.

p.1

It has the following strengths

n The childminder supports children's developing self-esteem effectively. For example, she offers them cuddles, praises them and helps to develop their confidence. n Children develop warm and secure attachments to the childminder. She provides a safe and welcoming environment and a variety of resources. n The childminder works well with her assistant and co-childminder. She keeps up to date with any legislative or practice changes and shares this information with them. n The childminder supports the children's understanding of healthy eating. She provides a variety of healthy snacks and meals.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

n review the organisation of planned activities so that children are consistently able to become fully engaged in their learning n gather detailed information from parents about children's starting points more consistently and monitor their ongoing progress effectively to meet their individual needs n use all opportunities to support children to manage their personal care.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector viewed the premises used for childminding. n The inspector observed the childminder and her assistant interacting with the children. n The inspector sampled documentation, including planning, children's development records, policies and procedures. n The inspector spoke with the childminder and her assistant at convenient times during the inspection.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder has recently started working with a co-minder. However, she has not embedded monitoring systems to help identify gaps in some children's development at an early stage and to provide the appropriate support. She does not consistently gather children's initial starting points, and does not monitor their ongoing progress effectively. For example, she does not consistently plan effectively for children's next steps in their learning. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder, her co-childminder and assistant have a good understanding of how to help keep children safe and know what to do and who to contact if they have a concern about a child's welfare. The childminder supports children who speak English as an additional language appropriately. For example, she has dual-language signs and uses a visual timetable. Since the last inspection the childminder has strengthened the partnerships with other providers that children attend,

to promote continuity in their learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

Although the childminder does not always challenge and extend children's learning, she does support their communication and language development. For example, during an activity she repeats back words and names animals, such as a 'penguin', 'polar bear' and 'snowy owl'. However, during some planned activities children are not fully engaged or motivated to learn. The childminder supports children in developing their mathematical skills. For instance, children begin to count and name colours. They play an assortment of games, such as finding numbers in snow dough, and building towers.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder has not developed an effective way to deal with some children's challenging behaviour. However, children learn manners and are beginning to share and take turns. On occasions, the childminder does not make good use of what she knows about children to help her plan challenging activities and help them to develop their independence. For example, children are encouraged to wash their hands before snack, however, this is not monitored well enough to ensure robust hygiene arrangements are in place. Children choose whether to play indoors or outdoors, and choose their own resources.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Overall, children learn some skills that help prepare them for their move to pre-school and school. For example, they learn about going to school and having a routine. Children's physical skills develop appropriately. For example, they learn to use the various equipment, such as a ride-on car, and learn how to build sandcastles in the large wooden sandpit.
