p.1

This provision is inadequate

n Children's safety and well-being are compromised because the premises are not always secure. Security risks at the front door are not consistently managed effectively. n The childminder has failed to notify Ofsted of the assistants working on the premises, to enable their suitability to be fully checked. n The childminder does not ensure that her assistants are clear about their responsibility to follow all procedures to keep children safe. n The childminder does not always organise sleeping arrangements effectively, to help ensure that those children who wish to rest or sleep do so undisturbed. n The childminder does not use self-evaluation as well as possible to identify precise targets to help raise the quality of her provision to a higher level.

p.1

It has the following strengths

n Partnerships with parents are strong. For example, the childminder ensures that parents receive verbal and written communication each day to help maintain continuity in children's care and learning. n The childminder supports children's developing awareness of how to manage their own behaviour. She encourages children to share resources, take turns and consider the needs of others. n The childminder knows children well. She is kind, supportive and encourages children to be independent. She provides regular praise, which helps to raise children's self- esteem. n Children are developing the skills they need in readiness for school. For example, they recognise their own names and photographs for self-registration.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and Childcare Register the provider must: Due date ensure the premises are secure and any potential risks to children's safety are identified and appropriately managed 26/11/2018

ensure that Ofsted is provided with the required information so that the suitability of assistants can be fully checked 26/11/2018

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

ensure all staff follow the correct procedures relating to accidents, specifically recording accidents children sustain in the setting and making sure any first-aid is administered where necessary 26/11/2018

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

n improve sleeping arrangements so that children have better opportunities to rest undisturbed n focus more precisely on monitoring the quality of the provision to help develop practice to a higher level.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. n The inspector spoke with the childminder, the assistants and children at appropriate times during the inspection. n The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as records of attendance, the childminder's training and evidence of the suitability of adults working and living on the premises. n The inspector took account of the views of parents through written and verbal feedback.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is inadequate

The arrangements for safeguarding are not effective. The childminder has not taken effective action to ensure the premises are secure. The front door does not always remain locked and it can be easily opened from outside, which could have a significant impact on children's safety. The childminder has also failed to provide Ofsted with the required information to enable suitability checks to be carried out on all assistants working on the premises. The childminder identifies signs and symptoms of abuse and knows what to do in the event of a concern. She has attended training to support her knowledge of wider safeguarding concerns and maintains essential skills, such as first aid. The childminder employs assistants and organises essential training for them. However, she does not ensure that they have a thorough understanding of all health and safety procedures, such as completing accident records and knowing the action to take

in the event of minor accidents or injuries. The childminder reflects on some of the activities and experiences that she provides overall. However, the evaluation of her practice is not robust enough to keep her knowledge of all statutory requirements up to date.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder and her assistants are actively involved as children play. They join in with singing, stories, giggles and laughter, creating a lively environment where children are keen to explore. The childminder uses questioning effectively, which helps children to think and respond. For example, she encourages children to describe the colours of fireworks and the changes in the weather. Children enjoy singing familiar songs. They join in with simple actions, to support their understanding of the words they use. This helps to extend their vocabulary and develop their communication skills.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are inadequate

The weaknesses in leadership and management have an impact on children's safety. The childminder does not do enough to keep children safe because she has not taken robust action to secure the premises, monitor the practice of her assistants or supply Ofsted with required information. In practice, however, children are happy and enjoy the childminder's interaction as she plays alongside them. They share warm smiles and the childminder offers regular praise when they do well. Children play in the garden and enjoy local walks to areas of interest, which provide children with regular exercise. The childminder's home is welcoming and she provides a stimulating learning environment. However, she does not consistently provide a quiet space for young children who prefer to rest or sleep in quieter surroundings.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are making good progress from their starting points. They are developing positive attitudes to learning and maintain concentration well. Children show good levels of dexterity and perseverance when holding paintbrushes and chalk. Younger children are supported to drink from a cup without spilling and to use cutlery independently. Children talk to their friends about what they are doing, which helps to develop their social skills. Children have a trusting relationship with the childminder and are keen to join in with activities.
