Interim inspection report children’s home: SC456911 1 SC456911 Registered provider: Cambian Childcare Limited Interim inspection Inspected under the social care common inspection framework
p.1
Information about this children’s home
A private organisation runs this home, which provides accommodation for up to six children. The home offers mental health support to children who may have experienced neglect or emotional abuse and/or had traumatic experiences that have left them vulnerable. The manager was registered with Ofsted on 12 November 2018.
p.1
Judgement at last inspection: requires improvement to be good
Enforcement action since last inspection: none
p.1
and young people since the most recent full inspection
This home was judged requires improvement to be good at the last full inspection. At the interim inspection, Ofsted judges that it has improved effectiveness.
p.1
and young people since the most recent full inspection
The home‟s manager is registered with Ofsted and has worked hard to meet the requirements and recommendations made at the last inspection.
p.1
and young people since the most recent full inspection
There has been a marked decrease in the number of missing-from-home episodes. The manager evaluates the records of these incidents and the use of positive and negative consequences. This monitoring enables her to understand how staff respond to these incidents and to make sure that responses are effective.
p.1
and young people since the most recent full inspection
Important records can be accessed by those who need access in the event of the manager being absent. This means that there is no delay in records being submitted to Interim inspection report children’s home: SC456911 2 Ofsted in a timely way.
p.1
and young people since the most recent full inspection
There has been a reduction in the number of agency staff working at the home. Agency staff are used as a last resort, ensuring that a consistent staff team generally cares for the children.
p.2
and young people since the most recent full inspection
The manager adds staff supervision and appraisal to the rota, so that staff are clear when these important meetings are to happen. This gives the staff regular and planned support.
p.2
and young people since the most recent full inspection
The staff help the children to cope with the pressures and uncertainties when they move into or out of the home. One child had a successful return home to live with his family. It was a planned move and what the child wanted. Another child had a well-planned move into the home. This transition was agreed with the child. This demonstrates an inclusive approach to involving children in the planning of their care.
p.2
and young people since the most recent full inspection
The children are making progress at different levels. One child attends education. Another child refuses to attend education. This child has made it very clear that he does not want to live at the home because it is far away from his place of birth. Despite this, the staff have worked to build good relationships with the child. The staff take him to see his family regularly, which is something that his family and social worker appreciate.
p.2
and young people since the most recent full inspection
The home has undergone a range of improvements. The children‟s computer has been repaired. There is a newly refurbished kitchen and the home has been nicely decorated throughout. All of the fire doors have been repaired and now close securely. The interior of the home has a warm, nurturing and homely feel. However, the exterior of the building requires some attention. The front door is marked and paint is peeling from window frames and parts of the stonework. This detracts from what is otherwise an attractive-looking home.
p.2
and young people since the most recent full inspection
The manager conducts monthly audits to ensure that all records are up to date and that tasks have been completed. The home‟s location risk assessment has been updated and gives a good assessment of local risks and how these can be mitigated.
p.2
and young people since the most recent full inspection
The most recent review of care was comprehensive. Monthly visits by an independent visitor are happening. However, the reports generated following a visit do not capture the views of the children‟s parents and families. This does not lead to a rounded picture of the care that the home provides.
p.2
and young people since the most recent full inspection
The staff de-escalate difficult and unwanted behaviours well. Physical interventions are used rarely. Despite this, the staff do not consistently record records of restraint. This can lead to an unclear picture of how staff respond when children display challenging behaviour.

Information about this inspection
Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children and young people. Inspectors considered the quality of work and the differences made to the lives of children and young people. They watched how professional staff work with children and young people and each other and discussed the effectiveness of help and care provided. Wherever possible, they talked to children and young people and their families. In addition, the inspectors have tried to understand what the children‟s home knows about how well it is performing, how well it is doing and what difference it is making for the children and young people whom it is trying to help, protect and look after.
