n The childminder uses what she knows about children to ensure that she challenges them effectively. p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder ensures that her knowledge is current, for example, through completing training and accessing information online. She is aware of the signs of abuse and her duty to prevent children being put at risk. She knows the local referral procedures to follow if she is concerned about a child. The premises are safe and secure. The childminder regularly networks with other childminders to share good practice and remain up to date with any changes. She has enhanced her knowledge of how to help children develop good communication skills. For example, she encourages them to ask for help during construction play and to build a tower before helping them, which has a positive impact on their development.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder gathers information from parents about children's current stage of development when they first start. She uses this to contribute to their starting point assessments and to prepare the environment for them to explore. For example, children show excitement to participate in an activity, including threading beads. This helps their hand-to-eye coordination. They develop a love for books and listen intently as the childminder enthusiastically reads to them. The childminder helps children to develop problem-solving skills and use mathematical language during their self-chosen play. For example, during an activity of stacking cubes, they talk about 'on top' and 'inside'. The childminder completes regular and precise assessments of children's progress. She shares these with parents to promote continuity in children's learning.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder prioritises children's health, safety and emotional well-being. Children settle well and have formed secure bonds with her. Children enjoy developing their self- help skills and show an awareness of good hygiene practices. For example, they know how to wash their hands after visiting the toilet and before they eat. The childminder teaches children about other people and places in the community during daily walks. Children develop an understanding of their local area as they visit local groups and the library. They benefit from fresh air and exercise when they visit the park. The childminder is sensitive towards children and uses praise effectively. Children have high levels of self-esteem and celebrate their achievements.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Outcomes for children are good. They develop good skills in readiness for the move on to school. They begin to manage their self-care needs independently and they confidently make decisions about their play. Children express themselves well and explore with curiosity, such as investigating the toys in different bags before choosing what to play with.
