Effectiveness of leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a secure understanding of how to keep children safe from harm. She knows the procedures to follow and the people to contact if she has concerns about children's safety or welfare. The childminder has secure risk assessments in place to ensure that children are safe while in her care. Her premises are safe, clean and hygienic. She is a reflective practitioner who is always seeking to make improvements to her setting. For example, she has renewed some uneven paving in her garden to prevent trips and has created a quiet area where children can chat together or read. The childminder effectively supports children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. For instance, she discusses any potential issues with parents and signposts them to appropriate external professionals to ensure children receive effective support.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
Children freely explore their environment. The childminder encourages children's early reading skills and children show an interest in sharing books together, enthusiastically discussing the pictures and reading the captions. She effectively supports their imaginations and muscial interests. For example, they use previous experiences and knowledge to play the drums and create their own tunes. Children have wide-ranging opportunities to explore the differences and similarities between the people of the world, such as practising the Haka from New Zealand and celebrating Chinese New Year with dragon dances. Children have many opportunities to cook and this further supports their understanding of other cultures. The childminder encourages children to lead their own learning. For example, children fold paper to make figures which they then decorate.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder skilfully supports good relationships between children of all ages and friendships thrive. Children say, 'We are one big team'. The physical skills of children are well supported and they understand established routines. For example, children know that when riding the bikes and the scooters, they all travel in the same direction to avoid bumps. Older children engage with younger children in playing games and this helps to support turn taking and sharing. Children delightedly reminisce about their past activities as they look at photographs with the childminder. They benefit from frequent opportunities to play outside in the fresh air and from regular outings to local parks. For example, the childminder effectively supports children in creating their own hanging baskets and in growing salad crops.
