This provision is good
n The childminder successfully works with parents to help children make consistently good progress in their learning and development. She keeps parents regularly updated about their children's achievements and how they can continue their learning at home. The childminder is particularly effective in gathering the views of parents. For example, she talks to them regularly and prepares detailed questionnaires for their feedback. n The childminder has established strong partnerships with local schools and other professionals. She is a member of a local childminder network who meet regularly with representatives from the local authority and other agencies. This helps the childminder to keep abreast of local and national developments and take part in a wide range of professional development opportunities. For example, the childminder has developed a greater understanding of how to develop children's mathematical skills during outdoor

play. n The childminder is highly effective at supporting children's early communication and language skills. She continually talks to children as they play and provides a commentary which helps them to develop their speaking and listening skills. Children are very attentive and confidently repeat new words and phrases. n Young children enjoy warm and secure relationships with the childminder. They are highly responsive to her gentle nurturing approach and delight in spending time playing games with her. For instance, they become engrossed in creating a model farmyard. n The childminder plans a wide range of stimulating activities for children. She skilfully includes resources to match individual children's interests. For example, motorcycles of different colours help young children extend their knowledge of colour. n At times, the childminder does not encourage younger children to independently select

p.2
Effectiveness of leadership and management is good
The childminder has a good knowledge of the early years requirements. She has high expectations of the quality of her provision and carries out effective self-evaluation to target further improvements. For example, she has introduced an array of interesting natural resources to promote children's sensory skills development. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a secure understanding of how to keep children safe from harm and knows how to recognise and report any concerns she may have about a child's welfare. The childminder undertakes detailed risk assessments on her premises and during outings. She has made robust plans in the event of an emergency. For instance, the childminder ensures children know how to safely leave the premises and has made arrangements to continue her provision at the local school.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The experienced childminder has a strong understanding of child development. She plans activities which strengthen children's small-muscle skills to help them with their use of writing tools and scissors. They roll and shape dough and delight in 'squidging' their designs. The childminder creatively chooses resources to promote children's sensory skills. Young children excitedly explore the shape, colour and texture of many different-sized balls hidden inside a box. The childminder collects information about children's learning and collates this in attractive journals which parents enjoy sharing. She uses this information to plan purposefully for children's next steps and to identify any gaps in their learning.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder encourages children to follow a healthy lifestyle. She promotes the benefits of a healthy diet, fresh air and physical exercise and supports younger children to walk more, such as on the school run. Children receive good support to develop their confidence and self-esteem. The childminder prominently displays children's photographs and achievements and young children proudly point to these during play. She skilfully uses such opportunities to reinforce the names and interests of other children in the setting. This contributes to children's awareness and consideration of others and helps to build relationships between children of different ages. Children learn about the local community during visits to parks, shops and playgroups. They enjoy joining with others from the community, including the elderly, to celebrate events, such as Christmas.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children flourish in what parents warmly describe as a home-from-home provision. They make good progress and are well equipped for the next stage in their learning, including their eventual move to school. Children learn independence and self-care skills, such as washing their hands and dressing themselves. They are eager and motivated to learn. Young children concentrate for long periods of time as they become engrossed in creative and play activities with the childminder. They learn to count and recognise colours and shapes in everyday objects.
