additional challenges to help them to develop and progress well. Children are growing in their own independence and are supported well to explore and become inquisitive. n The childminder has worked well towards the recommendations from her last inspection. For example, she enters into lovely conversations with children and gives them plenty of time to respond to questions asked of them, and to build on their increasing critical-thinking skills. n The childminder does not precisely plan for her own professional development to consistently raise her knowledge and understanding to the highest possible levels. n The childminder has not yet embedded her new systems for the tracking and monitoring of children's progress, to help her to swiftly identify any gaps in their learning.

The inspector and the childminder also discussed how the childminder plans for and prioritises her professional development.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

The childminder has high expectations for the children in her care. She is dedicated and responsible in her role. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder is confident about how she would identify potential signs of abuse and the procedures she would follow to report a concern about the safety and welfare of a child. The childminder uses good risk assessments to provide a safe and secure home, and helps children to gain an early understanding of protecting themselves. For instance, they practise fire evacuations and learn about tidying up toys to prevent accidents. The childminder evaluates her provision well and seeks the opinions and views of the parents and children to help her find areas for improvement. She has good relationships with other childminders in the area to share ideas and to help build on children's wider social experiences.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder gathers lots of information about what children like and can do when they first start. She uses this to provide activities and resources to further spark and build on children's own interests and choices. Children enjoy playing with natural resources to build on their sensory experiences in their play and learning. For example, babies enjoy using small herb bags to smell lavender and rosemary, and older children use mint scented play dough to make many shapes and patterns. The childminder helps children to build on their increasing vocabulary and communication skills. For instance, she repeats simple sounds and words for babies and prompts older children to ask questions when reading a favourite story.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children show a growing awareness of sharing and playing well with others. The childminder is consistent in her approach of helping children to understand the needs of others and to remember the house rules. For instance, they immediately recognise when to use the sand timer if they wish to have a turn with the same toy. The childminder helps children to learn about the wider world around them and their immediate community. They go on many adventures outdoors to learn about nature and explore with resources in their play that help them to learn about diversity, cultures and disabilities.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make steady and good progress. They are confident and excited learners. Children have many opportunities to build on their physical skills on their woodland walks and visits to the park to support their overall well-being. Children are developing early mathematical skills as they count objects when they play and solve problems when trying to fit pieces of jigsaw puzzles together. They are developing the necessary skills they require for the next stages in their learning.
