This is a provision that requires improvement
n The childminder has failed to maintain an appropriate paediatric first-aid qualification. n Reliable identification of children's next steps in learning is not embedded in practice. The childminder does not use information gained from her observations and assessments to plan and provide more challenging and inspiring activities for children. n The quality of teaching is variable and, as a result, learning opportunities lack enough challenge for children to ensure they make consistently good progress. n The childminder does not gather detailed information from parents about children's capabilities at home when they first start at the setting.

It has the following strengths

She interacts appropriately, modelling vocabulary. Children are keen to count and identify shapes as they play. n The childminder provides opportunities for children to learn about the world around them. Children socialise with others and the childminder plans activities to build on their understanding of festivals and other cultures. n The childminder supports children's behaviour well. p.2
Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement
Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a good understanding of child protection issues and how to report her concerns to help keep children safe. She conducts risk assessments to minimise hazards in the environment. However, she has not ensured her first-aid certificate remains valid. The childminder has identified weaknesses in her practice. She finds out some information from parents about children's interests and preferences when they first begin attending. However, early information sharing with parents is not always effective. This does not enable the childminder to apply a consistent approach to support children's development. The childminder understands the importance of working with other settings that children may attend. However, she does not focus her professional development on raising the quality of teaching to a consistently good level.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement
The childminder is experienced and provides some activities that interest children. She observes children as they play. However, she does not fully use this information to accurately assess children's progress and to plan for their individual next steps. The childminder provides children with effective support for their communication and language development. Children listen and repeat familiar words and phrases. They enjoy stories and listen attentively. The childminder provides children with opportunities to support their early writing skills. However, her teaching is not consistent enough to fully develop children's learning. For example, children freely access the resources but she does not use the opportunities extend their thinking skills and ideas.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement
The childminder has failed to maintain a valid paediatric first-aid qualification. Although this is a breach of requirements, in this case the impact is reduced as a result of previous training. The childminder has sufficient knowledge of how to administer treatment to children in the event of an emergency. Children play alongside each other well, as the childminder supports their developing understanding of taking turns and sharing consistently. They respond positively to the praise they receive, which supports their self-esteem successfully. The childminder effectively supports children's good health. She provides children with opportunities for outdoor play and to practise their physical skills.
p.3
Outcomes for children require improvement
Weaknesses in teaching and assessment means children do not benefit from enough challenge or stimulation. This means that some children are not making good enough progress. Nevertheless, children gain the basic skills to prepare them for learning in pre- school and school. They independently choose resources that are available and learn to manage their self-care needs. Children speak confidently and clearly. They demonstrate confidence as they engage in conversations with the childminder and visitors.
