Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This is a provision that requires improvement

n The childminder and her assistant observe the children's learning as they play and they make assessments about what they know and can do. However, they do not make regular use of this information to provide challenging experiences that support younger children's learning, to ensure that they make the best possible progress. n The two-way flow of information with parents about their children's learning and development is not fully effective to help parents to best support their children's learning at home. The childminder is currently developing new methods of communication and does not routinely share with parents what she knows about children's individual next steps in learning. n Self-evaluation is not robust enough to identify all areas where improvement is needed.

p.1

It has the following strengths

n Children settle well in the childminder's home. Older children share very warm relationships with their younger peers. They enjoy reading stories to them and helping them identify animal sounds that match pictures in a book, such as the sound of a walrus. n The childminder ensures that she is aware of changes in legislation and safeguarding practice. She keeps her assistant informed of their responsibilities to protect children from abuse and neglect. n The childminder successfully promotes healthy eating and advises parents on good foods to provide in their children's packed lunches. Children enjoy a wide range of foods that are high in nutritional value.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and Childcare Register the provider must: Due date utilise the information gained from observations and assessments of younger children's learning to provide challenging experiences to support their development fully 12/12/2018

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector spoke with the childminder, her assistant and the children at appropriate times during the inspection. n The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities in the childminder's home and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. n The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as the childminder's training certificates and evidence of the suitability of all adults living in her home. n The inspector took account the views of parents spoken to on the day.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder and her assistant access short courses to ensure they are fully informed of the procedures they must follow in the event of a safeguarding concern about a child in their care. The childminder evaluates some aspects of the service she provides. However, this is not fully effective in identifying all areas where improvement is necessary, with regard to children's learning and development, and partnership working with parents. The childminder has developed some channels of communication with parents and she shares information about their children's care. However, she is currently making changes to the methods she uses to make parents aware of what she knows about their children's next steps in learning. Parents are happy with the service they receive. They share that their children are happy in the childminder's home. They especially appreciate that she offers a flexible service

and effectively supports their children in making relationships with other children.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

Children independently select what they want to play with from a good variety of resources. Books are readily available and children frequently sit on comfortable child- sized chairs, looking at books alone or with their older peers. Overall, children are making some progress in their learning and development. The childminder observes the children as they play and she assesses their current level of development. However, she does not use the information frequently enough to provide challenging experiences to fully support younger children's learning. Children 'have a go' at building their own models, using construction materials that they attempt to connect together. They confidently access support from adults, for example, they approach the inspector for help with joining tubes together.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Despite some weaknesses in teaching and learning, children's personal, social and emotional development are good. The childminder and her assistant fully support children's emotional well-being. Young children spend long periods with school-aged children, and the childminder and her assistant effectively support them to make relationships and work together. Older children nurture their younger peers and make their learning enjoyable. The childminder and her assistant promote children's sense of self-esteem effectively. Young children behave well and receive praise during play and routines. For example, the childminder praises the children for asking politely to go to the bathroom and for helping to tidy the toys away in preparation for lunchtime.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Younger children do not consistently make as much progress as they can. The childminder observes and assesses the children's development. However, she does not provide them with challenging experiences frequently enough to support their development fully across the seven areas of learning. That said, overall, children are steadily developing some of the necessary skills in readiness for school. Young children are confident in communicating their wishes and feelings with their older peers and adults.
