Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision is inadequate

n The childminder does not have a clear understanding of her responsibility to meet the welfare requirements. She has failed to maintain her public liability insurance or obtain appropriate insurance to transport children in her car. This compromises children's welfare. n The childminder has not carried out a progress check for children aged between two and three years to provide parents with a written summary of their child's development, as required. n The childminder does not work effectively in partnership with other early years settings attended by children, to ensure a consistent approach that complements and supports children's ongoing progress. n The childminder does not gather enough initial information from parents about what their child already knows and can do, to help plan for children's learning from the start. n The childminder has not implemented self-evaluation effectively to identify the

weaknesses in her setting so these can be swiftly addressed.

p.1

It has the following strengths

n Children respond well to the childminder's warm and caring nature and form close emotional bonds with her. This helps them to feel settled and secure in her care.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and Childcare Register the provider must: Due date obtain public liability insurance and appropriate car insurance for vehicles used for transporting children 07/12/2018

develop partnerships with other early years settings that children attend, to maintain a consistent two-way flow of information, so that children are fully supported in their learning and development. 21/12/2018

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

n gather more detailed initial information from all parents to help to plan for children's learning when they start attending n develop the use of self-evaluation to identify weaknesses in the setting so that these can be swiftly addressed.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector viewed the areas of the home used for childminding. She talked to the childminder at appropriate times throughout the inspection and observed a variety of activities. n The inspector looked at a selection of policies and procedures, including safeguarding. She discussed risk assessments and the childminder's self-evaluation process. n The inspector carried out a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder. She discussed children's learning and development and sampled their records. n The inspector took account of the views of parents by reading a number of their comments on questionnaires obtained by the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is inadequate

Safeguarding is not effective. The childminder has not ensured that she has up-to-date public liability insurance or appropriate car insurance when transporting children in her care. This compromises children's welfare. However, the childminder has a suitable knowledge of know how to recognise possible signs and symptoms of abuse. She knows the procedures to follow should she have a concern that a child may be at risk of harm. The childminder evaluates some of her provision. For example, she has developed the way she observes children and plans their next steps in learning. However, her evaluation of the setting does not robustly identify areas of weakness so that these can be addressed. Parents report they are happy with the childminder and the service she offers. The childminder undertakes some professional development and has recently engaged with a local authority adviser to help develop her practice.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder has not completed the required progress check for children between the ages of two and three years, which means that parents have not been fully informed of their children's development. The childminder collects general information from parents about what children like to do and their care needs, before their children start with her. However, she does not ask for enough detail to enable her to build an accurate assessment of children's starting points in learning. She has not yet developed ways of sharing information with other settings that children attend so that children receive consistency in their learning. Even so, children enjoy their time with the childminder and engage well in play of their choice. For example, they mix paints and excitedly talk about the colours they are making or recall trips they have been on with the childminder. This helps their communication and language skills.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are inadequate

Weaknesses in the leadership and management of the setting means children's welfare is compromised. However, children enjoy interacting with the childminder and seek her out to play with them. They have access to a good range of interesting toys and activities, indoors and outdoors. Children learn about their own and other people's similarities and differences. For example, they take part in activities which explore festivals of different cultures. Children learn about the wider world as they, for instance, go on outings to local parks or farms.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

The weaknesses in the childminder's assessment and planning processes mean children are not making the best possible progress. However, they are gaining some of the skills needed for their next stage of learning and eventual move on to school. For example, children show they are confident as they choose the different toys and resources they want to play with.
