Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This is a provision that requires improvement

n The childminder's interaction and quality of teaching are not good enough to engage children in activities effectively. Although the childminder chats to the children, her interactions are not fully supportive of children's thinking and learning skills. n The childminder does not encourage children to learn about the importance of hygiene routines to support their good health. n The childminder does not create regular opportunities for children to learn about the similarities and differences between themselves and people in the world around them. n The childminder does not reflect fully on her provision and teaching, to help her identify and target all areas for improvement.

p.1

It has the following strengths

n The children are at ease and happy in the childminder's care and enjoy the activities on offer to them. Children behave well and have strong friendships with each other. n The childminder has a strong understanding of child protection procedures and whom to contact in the event of any welfare concerns. n Children have daily opportunities to play outside, which supports their physical development. For instance, they have fun in the childminder's garden and enjoy regular walks and trips out. n Partnerships with parents are strong. The childminder ensures feedback is consistent with parents to support continuity of care in children's care and learning.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and Childcare Register the provider must: Due date review hygiene routines to ensure necessary steps are taken to prevent the spread of infection, with particular regard to children's personal hygiene 28/12/2018

improve teaching skills to ensure that all children receive the support they need to make good progress in their learning and development. 28/12/2018

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

n extend children's knowledge and understanding of the similarities and differences between themselves and others, to develop their awareness of diversity further n develop reflection methods further to identify and address all areas of weakness, to improve the quality of the provision.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector observed children's play and the childminder's interaction during activities. n The inspector spoke with the childminder at appropriate times throughout the inspection and evaluated a planned activity with her. n The inspector spoke to children and interacted in their play. n The inspector examined documentation, including children's records, learning records, policies and procedures. n The inspector undertook a joint observation with the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder has an appropriate understanding of the early years foundation stage. However, she is not providing good-quality care and education to the children. For example, the childminder is not reflecting on her practice fully to ensure that she is providing consistently strong teaching. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder provides a safe home. The childminder understands the importance of keeping her training up to date. For example, she refreshes her safeguarding training annually and is currently attending training to help her develop skills in managing children's behaviour more effectively. Feedback from parents and children is positive.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

Children are happy and show interest in the activities available to them. The childminder plans a suitable range of activities for the children. However, she lacks confidence in the areas of learning that they promote and is not aware of how the activities support each individual child's next steps in learning. For instance, when children play with animals and cereal, she does not know that this supports children's imagination. The childminder talks to the children; however, she does not use communication fully effectively to aid children's developing understanding and speaking skills. For example, when children bring books to her, she does not read them, talk about the pictures, or ask sufficient questions to support children's communication and language fully. Despite this, the childminder's observation and tracking records show children are progressing well.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Children's health and well-being are compromised as the childminder does not teach or help children to follow simple hygiene routines. For instance, children eat snacks without washing their hands and the childminder gives children back forks that have been dropped on the floor, despite telling them these are dirty. Children behave well and benefit from a sufficient amount of praise. Children demonstrate that they feel safe in the childminder's company. For example, they go to her for cuddles. Children have a range of resources to support their learning overall. However, the childminder does not consistently help children to learn about their own heritage and explore the similarities and differences between themselves and others.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children develop some skills needed for their next stages of learning. For instance, they enjoy playing with puzzles which aids their basic mathematics skills. However, the childminder too often misses opportunities to promote children's understanding, listening and speaking skills. Consequently, the quality of teaching is not strong enough to meet children's ongoing learning sufficiently.
