p.1

The provision is good

n The well-qualified childminder is committed to making ongoing improvements to her practice. She regularly reviews the quality of the service that she provides. The childminder includes the views of parents and children in the process to help continually enhance the care and learning that she provides. n The childminder has a warm and friendly manner. She supports children's emotional well-being very well, such as sharing books with them related to their life experiences. n The childminder provides children with consistent messages about how to treat each other with respect. This helps them to behave well and builds on their readiness for school or nursery. n Children who have special educational needs (SEN) are extremely well supported. The childminder works very closely with parents to help ensure that advice gained from professional services are effectively implemented. This helps to ensure that there is

continuity in their care and learning. All children are making good progress according to their individual abilities. n Children are sociable and able to mix well with similar-aged children. The childminder organises purposeful outings. For example, they visit places of interest, such as to woodlands and age-appropriate social groups. The childminder effectively uses these experiences to help children to learn about the world around them and to increase their social skills.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

n At times, the childminder intervenes too soon when children are thinking about how to answer questions or do things themselves. n The childminder has not fully developed the links with other early years providers to extend children's ongoing progress, such as through shared information.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

n make the most of all opportunities to help children to think about the answers to questions they are asked and how they can do things for themselves n maximise the links with other providers children also attend to share information about children's progress and to help plan for their individual future learning further.

Inspection activities n The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this had on children's learning. n The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder. n The inspector looked at samples of children's records. She looked at a range of other documentation, including the safeguarding policy and procedures. n The inspector looked at evidence of the suitability of the childminder and other adults living on the premises. n The inspector spoke to the children. She took account of the views of their parents from documents containing their comments on the provision.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder ensures that she has a comprehensive understanding of the procedures to follow if she has any concerns about children. This includes information about how to protect children from extreme views and behaviours. The childminder has implemented very detailed policies and procedures to support the service that she provides. For example, she routinely reviews all areas uses by children to ensure that they continue to be safe and secure for their use. The childminder teaches children safe practices, such as when they go on outings. She regularly completes training to increase knowledge and understanding. The childminder uses the information gained well. For instance, a focus on how children's speech and language develop has had a positive impact on their communication skills. Parents are highly complimentary about the care and learning opportunities their children receive

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder regularly observes children's play and carefully checks their progress to identify what they need to learn next. She takes account of children's preferences and she interacts with them well to promote their learning. For instance, children have fun playing with toy animals. The childminder provides younger children with a running commentary and they attempt to repeat what she says. She helps older children to develop their mathematical skills during activities, such as counting animals in a story. Since the last inspection, the childminder has reviewed the layout of her resources. Children now have easier access to her wide range of good-quality resources. As a result, they are now able to freely express their creativity, such as painting or making items using re-cycled materials.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder offers a flexible settling-in procedure and children have a secure relationship with her. She effectively uses her skills to help ensure children continually feel settled and secure. The childminder understands the importance of fresh air, exercise, nutritious food and good-quality rest to children's health. She ensures that children are provided with opportunities to promote their independence. For instance, they confidently use knives to chop their fruit for their snack. The childminder provides children with ample opportunities to practice their physical skills. For example, they visit parks with challenging equipment and play outdoors in the childminder's well resourced garden.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are well prepared for their future learning, including their eventual move on to school. Older children develop independence in their personal care and know about using good hygiene procedures. They confidently draw and make marks to help build on their small-muscle skills in preparation for writing. Younger children help themselves to toys that interest them. They use their imaginations well and are learning how to take turns with other children, such as when playing ball games.
