Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

The provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

n The childminder does not make routine assessments of children's learning. She does not precisely identify what they need to learn next, to support them to make good progress in their development. n The childminder does not successfully plan appropriately challenging activities that consistently ignite children's enthusiasm to learn. n The childminder does not reflect on her practice effectively. She does not target enough professional development opportunities to address weaknesses in her teaching. Outcomes for children are not good enough. n The childminder does not exchange regular detailed information with other settings that children attend to provide further continuity in their learning.

p.1

It has the following strengths

n The childminder is kind and caring. Children develop close relationships with her. This helps to support their emotional well-being effectively. n The childminder gives consistent messages regarding expected levels of behaviour. As a result, children learn how to manage their feelings and behave appropriately. n The childminder takes children out regularly, such as on trips to the local park. This helps children to practise their physical skills and learn to socialise with others. n The childminder works closely with parents to help children to settle quickly. Parents comment that the childminder offers a home-from-home environment.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and Childcare Register the provider must: Due date improve the way in which children's progress is assessed, to precisely identify what they need to learn next and support them to make good progress in their development 20/01/2019

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

n identify and target ways to improve knowledge to focus on improving the quality of teaching, assessment and planning so that children are supported to make good progress in their learning n exchange more detailed information with other early years settings that children attend to help to promote a consistent approach in their care and learning.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector looked at the areas of the premises that are used for childminding, including the outdoor area. n The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and assessed the impact this had on children's learning. n The inspector completed an evaluation of an activity with the childminder. n The inspector discussed self-evaluation, risk assessments and the childminder's policies and procedures. She checked evidence of the childminder's suitability and training certificates. n The inspector met with some parents and took account of their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder does not effectively evaluate her practice to identify appropriate priorities for development. She has accessed some training, such as first aid. However, the childminder has not kept her knowledge of the early years foundation stage up to date. This results in weaknesses in the use of assessments and in promoting children's development towards the early learning goals. That said, the childminder provides an environment for children that is safe and welcoming. She ensures that children are supervised closely to help to promote their safety. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a suitable understanding of the signs and symptoms that may indicate possible child abuse and how to respond.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder's knowledge of how to promote children's development is not strong enough to ensure that the quality of teaching is consistently good. Although she observes children regularly as they play, she does not use the information gained effectively. The childminder does not precisely assess children's progress to help her to identify what they need to learn next. This means that activities are not always well planned and suitably challenging to fully extend children's learning. As a result, some children become disinterested and they wander off. That said, the childminder helps to re-engage them through positive praise and encouragement. She provides a suitable range of resources that children access independently. For example, children demonstrate their skills in operating simple technology. They are keen to press the buttons on interactive toys and respond positively to the sounds and lights.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder does not share detailed information about children's development with other early years settings children attend. This means that a highly collaborative approach to promoting continuity in children's care and learning is not in place. Children have fun and enjoy their time with the childminder. Children learn about the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle. For instance, they enjoy eating fresh fruit, such as bananas for snacks. Children wash their hands before eating and after toileting. They demonstrate suitable self-care skills.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Weaknesses in assessment and planning mean that children are not fully supported to make consistently good progress in all areas of their development. However, children learn some skills that help to prepare them for future learning and school. Children are confident talkers. They ask questions, share their thoughts and ideas, and let adults know their needs. Children recognise colours and count as they play. They are curious, inquisitive and show a keen interest in investigating how things work.
