The provision is good

n The childminder is well organised and professional. She reviews her work and asks parents for their feedback to find ways of making ongoing improvements in her provision. n The childminder provides multiple opportunities for children to use their problem- solving skills. When they play with a train set, children select pieces to make the track go round in a circle. n The childminder promotes children's good health and hygiene well. She encourages children to cover their mouths when they cough, explaining how this helps to prevent germs from spreading. n The childminder works closely with parents. Together, they decide on care routines and sleep patterns that meet children's needs and help to provide families with quality time together. n Children are making good progress in their learning from their individual starting points.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

n The childminder has not fully explored ways to exchange information with other settings that children attend to even more effectively support their learning. n The childminder does not have a plan for enhancing her professional development beyond completing required training to even further raise the quality of her teaching skills.

p.1

She looked at relevant documentation, such as evidence of the suitability of the childminder and household members. n The inspector read and took account of the written feedback provided by parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

The childminder has a good awareness of safeguarding issues on a local and national level. She recognises the signs and symptoms that children might be at risk of harm and discusses how she would report any such concerns to her Local Safeguarding Children Board. The childminder reviews the areas she uses for childminding and takes effective action to keep children safe in her care. Arrangements for safeguarding children are effective. The childminder establishes close working relationships with parents. She makes scrap books of children's work and photographs of them at play to provide parents with a lasting record of their time in her care.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Creative activities help children to learn about shape and space. Children use building blocks to make patterns on the deep pile in the carpet. They make different patterns and correctly name the shapes, showing their emerging mathematical skills. The childminder observes children and assesses their development. She knows children well and provides activities that she knows they will enjoy. Children practise their physical skills. They make marks on a water mat and use cars to make tracks across the mat. They observe the difference between the patterns they make and increase in confidence in their developing writing skills. Children make very good progress in their communication and language skills. The childminder uses her knowledge and skills well to help boost children's talking and listening skills and they flourish in this area.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is gentle in her approach and provides a calm and welcoming environment for children. She is nurturing and caring towards children and they develop close attachments to her. The childminder encourages children to make decisions about what and where they want to play. They talk about the things that they enjoy doing and know what they are good at, such as building towers from bricks. The childminder recognises and praises children's achievements. She talks about what they have done well, this helps to raise their self-esteem and boosts their confidence.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are enthusiastic and confident in their learning. They are rapidly gaining the skills that they need in readiness for starting school. Children are starting to recognise letter sounds and are aware of some of the letters that spell out their names. Children's behaviour is excellent, and they are gaining a sense of responsibility for their learning environment. They tidy away toys when they finish playing and are aware of babies and their need to play safely around them. This demonstrates children's growing sense of empathy and awareness of the feelings and safety of others as well as themselves.
