p.1

The provision is good

n The childminder is a calm and patient role model. Children settle quickly into daily routines and play happily. They develop a good sense of belonging and self-worth. Their behaviour is good. n The childminder makes good use of observation and assessment to plan activities that motivate children to be involved. Children make good progress from their starting points and develop important skills ready for their move to school. n The childminder has a good understanding of children's individual learning needs and she supports these well. For example, she provides a wide range of activities to suit children's needs and she sensitively guides and supports their play. n The childminder shares her policies and procedures with parents to support the safety and well-being of children. n Parents are very positive about the good care and support their children receive from this attentive childminder.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

n The childminder does not have secure systems in place to share information about children's learning with other settings that they attend, to support continuity in their care and learning. n The organisation of the toys and resources does not help children to easily make independent choices and lead their own play.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

n strengthen relationships with other settings that children attend, to support continuity in their care and learning n enhance opportunities for children to make independent choices from the range of toys and resources.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector observed the childminder's interactions with children and assessed the quality of teaching and impact on children's learning. n The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection. n The inspector looked at a range of documentation, including children's progress records, policies and procedures. n The inspector engaged in a joint observation with the childminder. n The inspector took account the views of parents through written documentation, including parent questionnaires.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of how to keep children safe, and the procedures she must follow if she should have any concerns about a child's well-being. She is very aware of potential hazards both within her home and during outings, and takes action to minimise these. The childminder reflects on her practice to make improvements for children. She understands the importance of keeping her knowledge and skills up to date. For example, the childminder engages in relevant training and has professional discussions with other childminders to continue to develop and enhance her provision.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder accurately completes the progress check for children between the ages of two and three years, and shares this with parents. This helps parents to know children's levels of learning and complement these further at home. The childminder communicates effectively with young children and extends their learning. For example, she describes what they are doing and repeats their words back to them slowly and clearly, helping to extend their vocabulary. They learn to operate technology, such as pushing buttons on toys and repeating different sounds and words. Children are interested and motivated to learn. For example, they love books and talk about their favourite pictures and colours. They thoroughly enjoy songs and rhymes and they clap along to music.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder provides clear explanations that support children's understanding about sharing and taking turns. She provides daily opportunities for children to be physically active and engage in outdoor activities. They visit the library and local groups, which provides opportunities for children to socialise. Children take part in activities for different festivals and events. This helps them learn about the similarities and differences between one another. Children develop their understanding of healthy living and hygiene practices. For example, they wash their hands at appropriate times during the day, enjoy healthy snacks and they feed themselves at mealtimes.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are enthusiastic learners with good levels of imagination and motivation. They take turns and show consideration to others. They count, sort and match objects and they use good mathematical language to describe the shapes and sizes of objects around them. Children are able to move on to their next stages with key skills for their future learning.
