p.1

The provision is good

n Children benefit from playing with good-quality resources that are inviting, stimulating and readily available to help them develop independence. n Partnerships with parents are a key strength. Parents' comments are very positive. They particularly appreciate the wide range of opportunities offered to consistently support the feelings and behaviour of children. n Children develop strong emotional attachments with the childminder and are happy and content in her care. The childminder is calm and caring, and children relate well to her. n The childminder has established a focused programme of professional development to improve continually the quality of teaching. n The childminder makes very good use of links with parents. For example, she develops resources that help children who speak English as an additional language to learn words bilingually so that they make good progress in preparation for school.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

n Although children's creative development is good overall, the childminder misses opportunities to extend children's curiosity to help them acquire richer imaginative play.

Inspection activities n The inspector observed activities and interactions between the childminder and the children. n The inspector reviewed the play equipment, resources and areas of the premises used for childminding. n The inspector discussed the childminder's evaluation of her provision and spoke with children at appropriate times throughout the inspection. n The inspector looked at documentation, including a sample of children's records and the childminder's planning and assessment. n The inspector took into account the views of parents from verbal and written feedback.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has kept up to date with child protection guidance. She has a clear understanding of how to identify signs that a child is at risk of harm and the correct procedure to follow to help assure their welfare. The childminder monitors and evaluates the quality of her provision well and obtains the views of children and their parents to help her make ongoing improvements. For example, she has improved the organisation of resources to encourage children to choose more freely and she organises dance with children in their physical play. The childminder maintains good standards of safety in her home and on outings, to keep children secure and help them to learn about staying safe.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has a good understanding of each child's stage of development and their needs. She plans children's learning well and uses good teaching and assessment skills to adapt activities to keep children challenged and interested. For example, she extends older children's learning to name and paint shapes. She also gives them enough time to lead and develop their own play or to follow their own interests. She is effective in engaging with parents to obtain detailed information about their children's abilities when they first start. The childminder provides children with good opportunities to be outdoors and visit places within the surrounding area. For example, they take trips to the park, toddler groups and the library to help develop children's conversations and discussions about the local environment.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is a very good role model and praises children often. This helps them gain confidence and positive self-esteem. Children listen well and behave positively, such as by using good manners and sharing well. For example, children help each other to stack and count beakers. Children learn to manage tasks for themselves to build their independence. The older children learn to dress themselves, clear up after lunchtime and tidy their toys. The childminder works in partnership with parents to ensure children have a healthy diet. She helps children to develop respect for others, for instance, through learning about different cultural celebrations around the world.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress from their starting points and the childminder supports them to move forward to their next stage of learning. She has a good understanding of how children learn. Consequently, during planned and unplanned activities, children are active learners who are keen to play and explore and enjoy testing out their ideas. Older children learn how to compare sizes as part of developing their early mathematical skills. Younger children enjoy investigating, for example, as they use shiny surfaces to look at reflections.
