p.1

The provision is good

n Leaders have taken significant steps to improve the club since the last inspection. They implement effective arrangements for the recruitment of staff and committee members to check their suitability to work with children. n The club has good partnerships in place with parents and the host school. They share information about children's care and progress successfully. This supports continuity for children. n Staff find out about children's interests and stage of development when they enter the club. They use the information to plan activities and provide resources that reflect these. This helps children to make choices about their play. n Leaders implement an effective key-person approach. This ensures children have good levels of support during the move on to school and into the club. Children settle well and soon develop their confidence in this busy environment. n Staff promote positive behaviour. They give children roles that promote their sense of

responsibility. They help children to negotiate and resolve disputes amicably. Children are polite and behave well.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

n The arrangements for staff's professional development do not sharply focus on their individual needs to help them raise their practice to the highest level. n At times, the noise level in the club is too loud. This hinders children's ability to listen and concentrate as well as possible.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

n strengthen the programme of professional development to target staff's individual needs and help them raise their skills to the highest level n minimise distractions for children so that they can listen and concentrate more successfully.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector observed the activities indoors and outdoors and the interactions between staff and children. n The inspector talked to staff and children at appropriate times during the inspection. n The inspector discussed with staff and the manager how staff's professional development is supported. n The inspector held a meeting with the club manager and provider. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of staff working in the club. n The inspector spoke to a number of parents during the inspection and took account of their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. Leaders are working closely with the local authority and outside agencies to improve their knowledge further and support the continuing improvement of the club. The manager completes a robust induction for new staff. Through individual discussions and staff meetings, she ensures all staff have a secure knowledge of their roles and responsibilities. These meetings give staff the opportunity to discuss and share their ideas about the club and help them to enhance their practice. Staff know they must declare any changes that might make them unsuitable to work with children. The manager understands the disqualification process and the appropriate action to take to keep children safe. Children learn how to keep themselves safe, for example, they use outdoor play equipment safely. Staff have developed good links with the host school and communicate effectively with the teachers. Parents and children are

encouraged to share their views. For instance, following parent feedback, biscuits have been replaced with healthier options for snack.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

All staff have received training to improve their understanding of the early learning goals. They use their knowledge to plan activities that take into account children's different abilities. This helps children to build on what they already know and can do. For example, staff help them to think critically and solve problems, such as working out how they can use construction equipment to move objects. Children enjoy their time at the club and often do not want to leave when parents arrive. Staff involve children in activities that help their understanding of rules and promote cooperative play. For instance, they work as a team during a game of football. Staff spend time talking to children. They promote their communication skills through discussions, finding out about what they have been doing at home with their families and in school.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Staff provide a welcoming environment for children. They gather information from parents about children's interests and friendship groups to help them to get to know children well. They provide high levels of support for children who are less confident in this large social group. As a result, children settle well and are soon keen to be involved in activities. Children enjoy taking responsibility for everyday tasks, for example, setting up and clearing tables at snack time. Staff give children plenty of praise and encouragement. They recognise children's achievements and positive behaviour. This helps children to build high levels of confidence and self-esteem. Children benefit from outdoor play in the fresh air every day.
