p.1

The provision is good

n The childminder and her assistant are sensitive and caring, and children develop positive relationships with them. Children settle quickly as they arrive and parents comment that they feel welcome in the childminder's home. n The childminder and her assistant monitor children's progress closely and provide parents with updates about children's achievements. Parents contribute to initial assessments and the childminder gathers information on a regular basis. Children develop well in all areas of their learning. n The childminder helps children to adopt healthy lifestyles. For instance, children enjoy fresh air and physical exercise and develop their muscles using a range of equipment outdoors. Meals and snacks are varied and healthy, and children willingly try new foods. n The childminder visits local settings and liaises with other childcare professionals. This helps her to introduce new ideas and to drive forward the quality of her setting. She

identifies areas of her provision to improve further and involves parents in the process. For example, parents complete questionnaires to provide their views. n Children are provided with many opportunities to develop positive behaviour and good social skills. For instance, the childminder supports children to share and take turns. Children play together well and older children treat younger children with kindness and respect.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

n The childminder and her assistant do not always adapt their teaching during planned group sessions effectively to help children of all ages become fully engaged and maximise their good learning even further. n The systems to monitor and evaluate the teaching practice of the childminder and her assistant do not focus sharply enough on helping to raise the quality of teaching to the highest levels.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

n adapt the teaching during group sessions to capture the interests of all children and help them to become more engaged in the learning n strengthen the systems to monitor and evaluate the teaching practice and focus on raising the quality of teaching to an even higher level.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector observed the childminder and her assistant's interactions with children during activities and free play. She assessed the impact this has on children's learning. n The inspector observed a planned activity and jointly evaluated the teaching with the childminder. n The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder and her assistant at appropriate times during the inspection. n The inspector viewed a range of documents and checked evidence of the suitability of adults living and working on the premises. n The inspector spoke to a parent on the day of the inspection and viewed written feedback provided by parents prior to the inspection. She took account of their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

The childminder provides a safe and secure environment for children to explore. She completes risk assessments each day and offers good levels of supervision at all times. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder and her assistant access regular child protection training and this helps to ensure that their knowledge is up to date. They are alert to the potential signs of abuse and neglect. They understand their responsibilities in relation to protecting families from wider safeguarding issues and know how to respond to any concerns.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder provides children with opportunities that help to develop their finger muscles. For example, older children concentrate as they place hooped cereal over dry spaghetti sticks. Children introduce their own ideas and decide to attempt to place two hoops on each time. The childminder plays alongside children and skilfully weaves in mathematical learning. For instance, she asks children to estimate how many they can fit onto the spaghetti. Children use number names and enjoy testing out their predictions. The childminder challenges children to make comparisons. Children use language, such as 'more' and 'less', as they compare the different amounts. This helps to extend children's understanding of mathematics further. The childminder promotes younger children's speaking skills well. For example, as children play with a toy farm set, the childminder positions herself at children's level and models appropriate language.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children copy the words that they hear, such as 'cow' and 'horse', and they giggle as they practise animal sounds. Older children show an interest in letters. They recognise letters displayed on the wall and enjoy exploring the words that start with that sound. For example, they know that dinosaur starts with a 'D' sound. The childminder offers parents ideas to help extend children's learning when at home. For instance, when learning new numbers and colours she asks parents to engage children in looking around their home to see what they can find. This helps to build on children's good learning that takes place in the setting.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are confident, independent and motivated to complete tasks. For example, the childminder supervises older children as they chop bananas at snack time. Younger children capably put their shoes on for outdoor play and help to put their coats on. All children are supported to contribute their ideas and make decisions. For instance, they each take a turn to choose songs during singing sessions. Care routines are sensitive and children understand what happens next. For example, younger children find the changing mat and nappies after lunch and cooperate well with everyday routines.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children develop the skills that help to prepare them for school. For example, three-year- old children learn to count objects and already recognise some letters. Younger children maintain concentration well during self-chosen play. For instance, they repeatedly post a ball down a hole and wait with anticipation for it roll out at the bottom. Overall, children are motivated to learn.
