p.1

The provision is good

n Children are happy and relaxed in the childminder's homely environment. They make friendships and are kind and considerate towards the needs of others. n The childminder plans worthwhile activities and experiences that incorporate themes and children's individual interests. n Children benefit from daily exercise and outdoor activities to encourage their good physical skills. For example, they enjoy moving to music, climbing and balancing on apparatus at the park and throwing bean bags. n The motivated childminder accurately assesses children's progress, including the progress check for children between the age of two and three. This helps her to quickly identify and reduce any gaps in children's learning. n The childminder monitors the performance of her assistant and has a commitment to the continuous improvement of her service. For example, they attend training courses, attend local childminding groups and use websites to read childcare articles.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

n Sometimes, the childminder does not make the most of her good relationships with parents to help them complement their children's learning at home. n Occasionally, the childminder does not make best use of opportunities to fully extend children's early writing skills during their play.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder and her assistant have a good understanding of safeguarding issues to protect children. They know the procedure to follow if they have a concern about a child's welfare. The childminder risk assesses the environments used by children, so they can play safely and securely. They learn about personal safety, for example, holding hands when crossing roads and climbing apparatus at the park. The childminder establishes trusting relationships with parents who are very positive about the service they receive. They praise the childminder and her assistant for helping their children to be confident and prepared for moving on to the next stage in their learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder closely monitors the progress that children make. She interacts purposely with the children during their activities and supports their language development well. For example, when reading a familiar story, the childminder encourages children to recall the correct words in sentences. Children learn to recognise letters and enjoy making up rhyming words. The childminder teaches children about shapes, size, colour and measurement. For example, during a game of hopscotch, the children have fun identifying numbers and colours. The childminder encourages children to explore basic technology, for example, during role play they use cash tills and telephones.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder and her assistant are good role models. They teach children to use good manners, share and take turns. Occasionally, when children find it difficult to share, the childminder manages this in a sensitive manner, according to their age and level of understanding. Children learn to live healthily. For example, they are offered nutritious snacks and meals and follow good hygiene routines. Children learn about the world in which they live. For example, they celebrate a variety of festivals and enjoy outings to observe animals.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are enthusiastic learners and they are highly excited by the activities provided. Children express their views, listen and follow instructions. They develop good independence skills, for example, they make choices about what to play with, put on their clothing, and ask to use the bathroom. Children use their imagination and develop creativity as they move imaginatively to music and sing songs and rhymes. Children gain the skills they require to help them progress to the next stage in their learning and eventual move to school.
