feedback from parents and children, which she uses to help her evaluate and make changes to enhance her provision further. This helps to ensure she maintains the excellent levels of care that she offers.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder uses risk assessments effectively. This contributes to maintaining a safe environment for children. The childminder and her assistant have a good understanding of the correct procedures to follow in the event of any concerns about a child's welfare. The childminder supports the assistant to understand her policies and procedures. She observes him as they work together to make sure that he knows how to promote children's welfare, skills and interests. The childminder has an effective programme of professional development in place. She recognises areas where she wants to extend her own knowledge and skills and those of her assistant and she makes sure that they attend relevant training courses. Consequently the standards of practice are excellent.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children come in happily from school and are familiar with the daily routine. They choose activities from the wide variety of resources that are available. For example, they are keen to do a word search that the childminder has prepared, based on 'Poppy Day'. Children use their imagination well as they build with large and small building blocks. They state they are making a fort relating to a film series that they are interested in. The childminder provides support and assistance where required. For example, she encourages children to sort the blocks into groups of colours, supporting their mathematical understanding. Children are well motivated and also keen to join in with adult-led activities. For example, older children read out the ingredients from a recipe for making dough while younger children measure and mix the ingredients. They all have great fun making models with the dough.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder and her assistant create an environment where children feel very comfortable and have a wonderful sense of belonging. They provide superb opportunities to encourage children to lead a heathy lifestyle and to be as independent as possible. Children take responsibility for taking off their shoes and hanging up their own coats when they arrive. They choose from a range of fresh ingredients as they prepare their own snack. Children chat to each other about their day and people they know. They enjoy regular access to the back garden where they can develop their physical skills and this encourages them to adopt an active lifestyle.
