p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

The childminder continually reflects on her practice and identifies areas that she would like to develop even further. For example, her professional development is often focused on understanding how children learn and develop, and she is committed to using this knowledge to continue to improve her already strong teaching skills. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of how to keep children safe and knows how to make referrals if she has any concerns about a child in her care. The childminder carries out detailed risk assessments to minimise hazards for children in her home and on outings. Parents' written testimonies show that they appreciate the childminder's nurturing and caring nature, and the wide variety of experiences she plans for children to enjoy and learn.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder is extremely experienced and plans a good variety of stimulating and challenging activities for children. She carefully observes their progress and identifies appropriate next steps to help them move towards the next stage in their learning. The planning of activities successfully relates to the interests and unique learning styles of children. For example, children delight in counting cars and identifying numbers when playing with a home-made garage, to reinforce their knowledge of colours and numbers. They show high levels of concentration, sustaining their interest for long periods. The childminder is particularly skilled at encouraging children to explore their own ideas and develop their thinking skills. For example, they confidently talk about their recent experience of seeing fireworks, as they colour and draw firework pictures.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is very warm and welcoming. She is a good role model and effectively helps children to learn about appropriate behaviour. For example, she gives children gentle reminders about boundaries as they play. Children have a very positive attitude to being physically active and playing outdoors. This contributes to promoting their good understanding of a healthy lifestyle. Children have good opportunities to learn about other people and cultures. They are supported well to develop an appreciation of similarities and a respect for each other's differences.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are active and inquisitive learners. They are eager to join in activities, self- assured and develop confidence in their abilities. Children have good listening skills and are confident communicators. They enjoy exploring books and playing in the home corner, showing good knowledge about different animals and types of food. Children gain the essential skills to prepare them well for the next stage in their learning, including nursery and school.
