p.1

The provision is good

n The childminder uses good systems to track and monitor the children's development, which helps her identify any gaps in their learning, providing additional support if required. n The childminder effectively promotes the children's mathematical skills, such as counting beyond ten and asking them which numbers come before or after a given number. n The childminder speaks softly to the children and is kind and caring. Children express themselves confidently, share kindly and display lovely manners. n The childminder frequently praises the children's efforts, which effectively supports and enhances the children's personal, social and emotional development. n The childminder offers the children a wide range of activities to help them develop the skills required for the next stages in their learning, such as school.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

n On occasions, the childminder has background music playing, which some children find distracting during quieter activities. n The childminder does not consistently explore different ways to promote children's understanding of families and different cultures beyond their own experiences.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector completed an evaluation of an activity with the childminder. n The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection. n The inspector viewed and discussed a range of documentation with the childminder, including key policies and procedures, the childminder's training certificates and children's records. n The inspector had a tour of all areas of the premises used for childminding. n The inspector observed the quality of teaching and the impact this has on children's learning.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

The childminder has a robust understanding of the safeguarding and child protection procedures and of her responsibilities. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder regularly completes a range of training courses to extend and complement her existing knowledge and skills. For instance, she is undertaking an early years degree, which has enhanced her understanding of how to further support children's learning in the play environment. Furthermore, this has aided the childminder's self-evaluation of her practice and highlighted additional areas for improvement. Partnerships with parents are good. The childminder regularly shares the children's learning files with parents and they have written complimentary reviews about the progress their children make while in her care.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has a clear understanding of the learning and development requirements. She undertakes regular observations and assessments of the children's development and uses this information to plan their next steps in learning. This is evident as the children delight in completing a large alphabet floor puzzle. The childminder successfully extends this learning by incorporating elements of communication, language and literacy into the activity. For example, matching the initial sound of letters to the corresponding objects and to the children's names. This activity further contributes to the children acquiring good problem-solving skills as they search for and put together the different jigsaw pieces.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder gathers comprehensive information from parents about their child's abilities upon starting with her. This contributes to her understanding their individual care needs well, such as their likes and dislikes. Children have plenty of opportunities to be physically active. For instance, they enjoy trips to the beach and the local woods, and use play equipment in the park. Children thoroughly enjoy musical activities and this is evident as they sing using a microphone, and dance together. Children are learning good self-care skills. They independently manage their own care needs and know to wash their hands after using the toilet.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children make good progress in their learning. They develop good independence skills, such as managing to put on and take off their coats. They play cooperatively together and form close bonds with one another. Children's behaviour is extremely good as they independently explore the learning environment, enthusiastically engaging with their chosen activities. They listen well and follow simple instructions, such as tidying up ready for snack time.
