Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Good 2

p.1

The provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

n The childminder has failed to notify Ofsted of changes to persons working with children on the premises. She has not provided Ofsted with the required information to enable checks to be completed to assess the suitability of new staff to work with children. n Although the childminder has effective systems for communicating with parents about children's progress and experiences in her care, she does not fully effectively engage parents with their children's learning at home and in the setting.

p.1

It has the following strengths

n The childminder and her assistants support and extend children's learning effectively during play. For example, they encourage children to think about mathematical concepts, such as height and size as they build a tower. Children talk about how many blocks they need to make the tower taller than themselves. n Children form secure bonds with the childminder and her assistants, settling quickly and seeking them out if they need reassurance or help with a difficult task. n The childminder and her assistants are good role models. They make healthy choices at snack time and demonstrate washing their hands carefully. They encourage children to develop self-care skills, such as washing their hands after going to the toilet. n Parents comment positively on the caring, homely atmosphere and the efficient communication of the childminder.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and Childcare Register the provider must: Due date provide Ofsted with the information necessary to complete suitability checks for all new persons working with children 07/09/2018

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

n explore more ways to encourage parents to become actively involved in their children's learning and development, both in the setting and at home.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. n The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder and her assistant. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of all persons living and working on the premises. n The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder. n The inspector spoke to children during the inspection. n The inspector took account of the views of parents spoken to during the inspection and through written feedback provided.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder has failed to provide Ofsted with appropriate information to undertake suitability checks for a new childminding assistant working on the premises. However, the childminder has demonstrated an understanding of how to resolve this and prevent this error occurring again. Children are not left in the sole care of the assistant at any time. The childminder and her assistants demonstrate a good understanding of the signs and symptoms of abuse, and what to do if they have concerns about a child's welfare. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder seeks the views of parents and children when considering ways to improve her service. She offers a wide range of activities relating to children's interests. This helps to promote children's enjoyment in learning. The childminder uses additional funding to help her meet children's individual learning needs and specific interests. The childminder and her assistants access training regularly. This

supports them to reflect on their practice and to improve the service offered to children.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder uses accurate observations of children during play to plan for their next steps in learning. She uses this information to identify and address any gaps in children's learning. The childminder provides a variety of resources to support children in developing an understanding of the wider world. For example, children pretend to take orders and cook pizzas in the role-play restaurant. Resources relating to special interests, such as sharks and vehicles, are made available for children to access independently. The childminder and her assistants segment words during sound games. This helps to support children's recognition of individual letter sounds and develop their early literacy skills.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The breach to requirements poses a potential risk to the welfare of children; however, the childminder supervises assistants at all times. Children enjoy their time at the setting. They are sociable and enjoy the company of their peers. Children are polite and well behaved. They take turns during board games with their friends. The childminder and her assistants recognise children's efforts and praise them. This helps to build children's confidence and self-esteem. Children play boisterously in the garden, using a range of equipment to play cooperatively. For example, they ask their friends to join them on the climbing frame so they can go down the slides together.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children, including those with additional needs, make good progress in their learning and development. They make better than typical progress in certain areas, such as language development. Children are confident talkers and show they feel valued. They share their opinions readily, talking about their favourite types of fruit, dinosaurs and meals with their friends. Children develop key skills for their next stage in learning, such as nursery or school. For example, they begin to develop early counting skills and delight in singing songs.
