Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

The provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

n The childminder has not given sufficient priority to improving aspects of her practice since the last inspection. The childminder does not have enough knowledge of child development to support children's progress well enough. n Planned activities do not always target children's individual developmental needs. Consequently, children do not routinely experience the teaching they need to progress in their learning. n The childminder does not share information with parents as well as possible, to help them to be fully involved in their children's learning and development.

p.1

It has the following strengths

n The childminder is very caring towards the children. Children show they feel happy in the childminder's care. They enjoy cuddles and receive lots of praise and encouragement, which promotes their emotional well-being very effectively. n Children's care routines are managed well and the childminder supports them in managing their own personal hygiene. This helps children to become increasingly independent and enhances their readiness for school. n The positive comments that parents provide in their feedback indicate that they are happy with the service provided. Parents comment on how the childminder is caring and sensitive to their children's individual needs.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

implement clear learning objectives for individual children into planned activities, ensuring that they link to the next steps in their development. 14/03/2019

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. n The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household. n The inspector spoke to children during the inspection. n The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder and evaluated the learning taking place. n The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback provided.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder does not use the information gained from assessments of children's learning and development to monitor their ongoing progress effectively. This means that she does not clearly identify their next steps and any emerging gaps in their development. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder recognises the possible signs of abuse and knows whom to contact should she have cause for concern about the welfare of a child. She undertakes regular checks on the environment and takes appropriate steps to ensure it remains safe for children. The childminder evaluates the impact of any recent training completed and uses this information to identify some areas for further improvement. Overall, partnerships with parents are good. The childminder shares daily information with parents about their children's care and asks them for feedback to help to improve her practice.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder has some knowledge and understanding of how to support children's learning and development. However, she does not plan focused activities consistently enough on what children need to learn next, to help them to make good progress in their learning. The childminder introduces mathematical concepts into relaxed conversations as children play. For example, she describes the shapes children can see and encourages them to count as they place individual rings onto their fingers during an activity with circular shapes. Children enjoy singing familiar songs. They join in with simple actions to support their understanding of the words they use. This helps to develop their communication skills.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder ensures children develop an understanding of healthy lifestyles. She provides opportunities for regular exercise and a range of nutritious home-made meals. Children are learning about the differences between themselves and others through resources that reflect diversity and regular discussions about the wider world in which they live. The childminder supports children's developing awareness of managing their own behaviour. Children are encouraged to share resources, take turns and consider the needs of others. The childminder is working in partnership with parents to meet the needs of children and their families. However, ongoing strategies for working with parents to share and enhance children's learning are not so well established.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Weaknesses in assessment mean that the childminder does not consistently help children to make the good progress that they are capable of. However, children learn some of the skills that they will need for the next stage in their learning. They attend playgroups and explore the local environment with the childminder. This helps to develop their social skills successfully. Children enjoy looking at the readily accessible books by themselves or with the childminder.
