Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Good 2

p.1

The provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

n The childminder does not keep written records of medication administered to children, as required. In addition, she does not have written consent from parents to administer the medication. n The childminder misses some opportunities to extend children's mathematical understanding. n The childminder has not fully considered all of the ways she can communicate with parents to encourage further parental input about children's learning from home, to inform activity planning and strengthen parent partnerships. n The childminder's self-evaluation is not fully effective as it does not identify the improvements required to meet statutory requirements, with particular regard to the administration of medication.

p.1

It has the following strengths

n The childminder provides a good range of activities to promote children's learning and development. Activities are well planned to support children's individual needs and interests. n The childminder provides a stimulating environment, with well-organised play areas and resources on offer. This helps children of all ages develop a good range of skills in all areas of learning. n The quality of teaching is consistently good. For example, the childminder uses an effective range of strategies to support and motivate children in their play.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and Childcare Register the provider must: Due date ensure that there is a written record of medication administered to a child, along with written consent from the child's parents/carers to administer each medication. 30/11/2018

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

n maximise opportunities for mathematical learning in daily routines and children's self- chosen play activities n extend communication systems to encourage all parents to share their children's achievements and successes at home, to further enhance the planning process n improve self-evaluation so that it accurately identifies and addresses any weaknesses and breaches in requirements.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n Discussions took place with the childminder at appropriate times during the inspection. n The inspector observed activities and the childminder's interactions with children in the home. n The inspector looked at documentation, including a sample of children's records, and checked documentation to confirm the suitability of the childminder and the other adult household member. n The inspector took account of written accounts from parents. n The inspector discussed professional development and self-evaluation with the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder has evaluated the quality of her provision and recognises some areas to develop, but she has not identified a breach in requirements for the safe administration of medication. The childminder does not keep required documentation to show that she has parental permission to administer medication to a child. She does not keep written records to show when medication has been administered to a child. Despite this, there is no significant impact on children's safety because, although she has not recorded it in writing, she communicates with parents and is clear on what dose to give and how to do this safely. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder is aware of signs and symptoms that would indicate a concern to a child's welfare and her role in reporting concerns. She attends regular training to help maintain up-to-date knowledge of safeguarding issues and to give her new ideas, which enhances her teaching.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder knows each child well and has a good understanding of how children learn and develop. She regularly observes children's learning, and monitors and assesses their progress effectively. She promotes children's language development well, including for those who learn English as an additional language. This helps them learn good communication skills in preparation for the next stage in learning. Children benefit from a range of musical play activities. For example, they enjoy playing musical instruments and moving to music. They enjoy exploring cause-and-effect toys that enhance their learning of how things work. The childminder regularly reflects on the activities she provides to ensure they are challenging and enjoyable. Children are encouraged to participate in story time and join in with actions and movements to develop their physical and literacy skills.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder does not protect children's welfare as well as required when administering medication. However, the impact on children is low because of her knowledge of safe administration and communication with parents. The childminder creates a relaxed atmosphere where children feel happy and secure. Children have daily fresh air, which gives them some opportunities to be outdoors. The childminder is a positive role model and teaches children suitable safety skills. For example, they are able to cross roads safely. The childminder works in partnership with parents to offer children complementary care from home. For example, she follows children's home sleep patterns to offer continuity. The childminder encourages children to be increasingly independent. For example, young children are encouraged to feed themselves and learn how to wash and dry their hands. This helps prepares them well for their future learning.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children make good progress during their time with the childminder. They have good confidence and levels of self-esteem. Children are eager and engage in play activities very well. They explore freely and independently, lead their own play and develop their own curiosity and interests. They are friendly towards one another and this helps them make friends from a young age, play together positively and share.
