The provision is good

n Children are excited to learn. The childminder provides a broad and balanced range of experiences that supports children's next steps effectively. Children make good progress from their starting points. n Children behave well. The childminder is a good role model and helps children resolve conflict independently. Children receive specific praise so that they know what they have done well. This helps build high levels of self-esteem. n The childminder helps children develop their communication and language skills effectively. For example, he explains to children about what is happening now and what will happen next, and commentates on children's actions to build vocabulary. n The childminder gains good information from parents, such as children's developmental starting points and individual needs, to enable him to support children's care and development efficiently. n The childminder evaluates his provision well. For example, he makes good use of

training and professional discussions to help make play exciting and enjoyable for children.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

n The organisation of some activities does not always encourage children to explore their own ideas and develop their curiosity even further. n The childminder does not use all opportunities to help children observe print in the environment to support their early reading skills and independent choices fully.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

n review the organisation of activities to enable children to extend their ideas and curiosity n provide opportunities for children to see print to support their early reading skills further and to help them make independent choices about their learning and play.

Inspection activities n The inspector observed the childminder's interactions with children as they played inside. n The inspector discussed the childminder's understanding of the early years foundation stage requirements and how he evaluates his setting. n The inspector considered the written views of parents. n The inspector sampled documentation, including children's assessment records, policies and procedures.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder uses his risk assessments for the home and outings well to enable children to play freely in a safe and secure environment. He has a good understanding of his role and responsibility to report any concerns about a child's welfare to appropriate agencies. The childminder works closely with other early years settings to enable consistency in supporting children's care, learning and development. Parents greatly appreciate the high levels of communication from the childminder about their children's learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder uses information gathered from parents and his detailed observations to assess children's progress effectively. He identifies any gaps in children's learning promptly and provides support to help reduce these. Children enthusiastically participate in songs and rhymes and learn to share and take turns in the group activity. Younger children show great excitement when they pick a rabbit out of the bag to represent a favourite song. Children create imaginatively as they explore the dough. They gain good small-muscle skills, for example, as they press and squeeze the dough into shapes. Children use a range of tools confidently, helping support their early writing skills. Older children use number names accurately in their play. For example, they recognise that an animal figure has more legs than a person and count to confirm their prediction.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children form strong bonds with an enthusiastic and caring childminder, who knows them well. This helps them feel safe and secure in a nurturing environment. The childminder works well in partnership with parents to support children's care needs, such as continuity in helping children toilet train. He shows children respect when dealing with toileting accidents, for example, asking before he removes clothing.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children gain skills they require for their next steps in learning and eventual move to school. They show interest in how things work, for example, how magnetic cars stick together and are keen to demonstrate and explain. Children listen intently to instructions, following action rhymes well. They are keen to 'have a go' at new experiences, such as building a dough boat to float on the water.
