The provision is good

n Staff provide children with a good range of interesting activities. They assess children well and use this information effectively to provide suitable challenges to children. Children make good progress in their learning and development. n Staff manage children's behaviour well. They share their expectations with children and use praise well to support children's positive behaviour. n The manager monitors the nursery well, for instance, by regularly checking planning and assessment and by keeping a close eye on children's progress. She makes effective plans to help those who require additional support.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

n Staff have not fully developed ways for older children to learn more about and to use technology. n Staff do not consistently provide children with a wide range of materials and textures to support their creative development.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector carried out a joint observation of a group activity with the manager. n The inspector observed the interaction between staff and children indoors and outdoors and spoke with children when appropriate. n The inspector tracked the progress of several children. n The inspector checked a sample of documentation and held a discussion with the manager. n The inspector spoke with parents and staff and considered their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

Staff work effectively with parents. They give them regular updates on their children's progress. Safeguarding is effective. Staff are fully aware of the procedures to follow regarding any concerns they may have about a child's welfare. Staff prioritise children's safety. They review all parts of the nursery to help prevent accidents. The manager has robust recruitment procedures which involve background checks on all staff to ensure they are suitable for their roles. She supports staff well in their roles. For instance, staff have regular one-to-one meetings with the manager to identify their training and support needs. Staff have attended a variety of courses, including a course on supporting children's language skills which has helped to improve children's communication skills.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Staff teach children good early mathematical skills. For example, children learn to recognise numbers and match them to the correct number of objects. Staff successfully support children's language skills. For instance, they question children effectively and give them time to think and respond. Staff read stories to children in lively tones and listen to children's spontaneous comments. They support children's understanding of the natural world well, for example, by teaching them about different seasons and how some animals go into winter hibernation. Staff provide good outdoor challenges for children, who develop a range of effective physical skills, such as jumping, throwing and catching, running and balancing.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are happy and secure, and they have warm and caring relationships with staff. Staff highly value each child as an individual, know them well and meet their emotional needs successfully. Children can do things for themselves. Older children can dress themselves and all children pour their own drinks and help themselves to snacks. They have a good awareness of safety. For instance, staff teach children about the dangers of slipping on fallen wet leaves on the ground and children use rakes to help clear them away. Staff teach children healthy routines, such as daily physical exercise.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children play well together and learn to share and to take turns as they play. They are confident and motivated to learn. Children learn to respect themselves and others from different cultural or religious backgrounds. They learn valuable skills to support their future learning.
