p.1

The provision is good

n The childminder offers a good range of activities and learning experiences that successfully promotes children's learning and development. n The childminder updates her knowledge regularly about how to keep children safe from harm. For example, she completes online training and regularly checks new local authority guidance to help keep children safe at her setting. n Children have fun playing in the childminder's home. They make good friendships with one another and behave well. n Children make good progress from their starting points and develop the skills they will need for future learning. For example, they listen well and confidently express themselves during activities.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

n The childminder does not take all opportunities to encourage children to count, recognise shapes and discuss size, to further develop their mathematical skills. n The childminder does not always accurately assess children's stages of development, to help plan for their next steps in learning.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

n extend children's learning about early mathematics to enhance their understanding of counting, size and shapes n make better use of assessment information to determine which stages of development children have reached, to help accurately plan their next steps in learning.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector and the childminder evaluated a planned activity together. n The inspector assessed the childminder's understanding of how to keep children safe. n The inspector read written statements from parents to gain their views on the provision. n The inspector looked at development records, policies and accident records. n The inspector observed teaching and the impact this has on children's learning indoors and outdoors.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

The childminder regularly develops her knowledge about creating high-quality learning environments. She uses this knowledge well, such as when she plans a range of messy play activities for children to enjoy. Children develop their creativity while they effectively learn new skills, such as mixing colours and serving spaghetti. The childminder demonstrates a solid understanding of how to assess risks in her environment. She confidently explains a wide range of indicators that children could be at risk of harm. She has a good understanding of procedures to follow if she has concerns about a child's safety. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder ensures all necessary records are completed well and understands the statutory requirements. Parents speak highly of the flexible service she offers, which supports their families as their needs change. They describe her service as wonderful and nurturing with plenty of fun and creative play.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children enjoy lots of exercise and fresh air each day as they develop their physical skills. For example, they explore local woodland, collecting sticks and listening for the sounds of wildlife. This helps them develop an understanding of the natural world around them and learn about small risks in their environment. The childminder follows children's interests and subtly teaches vocabulary as they play. For instance, children make shakers to develop their interest in sound and rhythm. They develop the small muscles in their hands and their coordination as they put items carefully into the bottle to make new sounds. They learn words such as 'loud' and 'soft' as they proudly create their own instrument.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are encouraged to develop their independence wherever possible. Young children try to put on their coats and feed themselves well with cutlery. Children are supported to develop self-care skills sensitively. They benefit from lots of praise for their achievements and show confidence as they attempt all tasks enthusiastically. Children enjoy learning about different cultures, such as when they create their own Chinese restaurant to role play in. Young children show consideration to one another and spontaneously use words, such as 'please' and 'thank you' when they speak to the childminder.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children play on a wide range of climbing equipment which supports them to develop their balance and coordination well. Children show a good understanding about the world around them. For example, they dress up and role play with a drill and cash registers. Children show high levels of concentration for their age.
