p.1

The provision is good

n The childminder carefully plans children's learning inside and outside her home, and out in the wider community. n Children respond well to the high level of warmth and affection offered by the childminder. The childminder creates an environment in which children feel safe, and she supports their emotional well-being very well. n Children respond positively to the childminder's praise and encouragement. They show respect to others and behave well as they play. Children successfully develop the skills they need for the next steps in their learning. n The childminder uses her strong understanding of child development to support all children to make good progress from their starting points. She knows the children well and recognises their needs. For example, she quickly acts to support children when they show they need to play in the fresh air, are thirsty, or need to sleep.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

n Occasionally, the childminder misses opportunities to support the youngest children to develop their language skills and extend their vocabulary.

Inspection activities n The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder, and reviewed how effectively she tracks children's learning and development. n The inspector looked at a sample of documents and spoke to the childminder about how she keeps children safe. n The inspector spoke with the childminder, and talked with the children present, at appropriate times during the inspection. n The inspector spoke to parents and took account of their views. n The inspector looked at the areas of the home used by the children and the resources available to them.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of the steps to take if she has any concerns about children's welfare. She ensures that her home is safe, secure and welcoming for children. The childminder undertakes regular training to make sure she continues to understand her safeguarding responsibilities, and to keep her knowledge and skills up to date. This helps her to plan carefully for children's future learning. She effectively evaluates her practice and involves parents and children when considering areas for improvement. For example, she has created zoned areas outside to give older children more opportunities to play football and team games, without interrupting younger children's play. Parents report that they are happy with the care the childminder provides for their children.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder provides interesting resources that are well planned to support children's levels of development. She observes them in their play and continually monitors their progress to ensure that gaps in their learning are identified and supported. She carefully plans a range of experiences that motivates children and ensures they develop good dexterity. For example, children are strengthening the muscles in their hands as they select toys, post shapes, and push buttons. Children enjoy their learning outdoors as they run, climb and listen to the sounds in the garden. There are plenty of sensory materials to engage children in their learning. For example, they feel the texture of the sand and talk about the scrunching of the colourful autumn leaves.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder builds good relationships with parents. She meets with parents and discusses children's routines, so that there is consistency across the day, for example, within children's sleep routines and at mealtimes. Children are learning to enjoy the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, such as healthy snacks, and increase their independence as they put on their coats to go outside. The childminder introduces children to the community in which they live, for example, as they visit the library, so they can listen to stories and paint with other children. The childminder's caring interactions support children well in their learning, and support their self-esteem as they learn to share and take turns.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children settle quickly and develop good levels of confidence to approach trusted adults for help and support. They are eager to explore resources and take pride in their achievements. Older children are learning to recognise numbers, and to use new words to compare size and shape. They are learning to recognise the letters they see in their environment and in their names. Children are developing the skills and dispositions they need for their future learning and their eventual move to school.
