p.1

The provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

n The provider does not have an up-to-date paediatric first-aid certificate in place. n The outdoor play space is organised to be welcoming. However, it does not fully support all areas of learning for those children who prefer to learn outdoors. n Suitable management systems and procedures are in place to monitor children's achievements. However, the childminder has not fully evaluated the impact of these systems to secure further the best possible outcomes for children.

p.1

It has the following strengths

n Children are extremely happy and settled in this calm, clean and homely environment. They enjoy warm, secure relationships with the childminder and other children. Children behave well. n The childminder works hard to ensure children enjoy their learning in a highly stimulating environment. She follows children's ideas and interests, and plans well for the next steps in their learning. n The childminder encourages children's good health and physical development effectively. Children enjoy nutritious snacks, and daily fresh air and exercise. They learn about which foods are healthy. For instance, they discuss that strawberries are already sweet and do not need sugar on them. n Children make good progress in their early reading, communication and language development. n Parents speak highly of the care the childminder provides. She makes every effort to share information consistently with them to provide children with a seamless, joined-up

Inspection activities n The inspector spoke with parents to seek their views about the provision. n The inspector observed the quality of teaching and assessed the impact this has on children's learning and development. n The inspector jointly evaluated an activity with the childminder. n The inspector looked at monitoring records, planning documents, risk assessments, evidence of suitability and a range of other documents, including policies and procedures. n The inspector had a conversation with the childminder about self-evaluation and the statutory requirements.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder does not have a current paediatric first-aid qualification, as required, because she did not realise her certificate had expired. However, this does not have a significant impact on children because she has suitable medical training, which enables her to deal with first-aid matters, should they arise. She has booked relevant training for the earliest possible date. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has completed safeguarding training, to help ensure she has a good understanding of her duty to protect children's welfare. She knows the signs and symptoms that may give her cause for concern. She understands her responsibility to report any child protection concerns to the relevant agency. The childminder has made changes to her provision that have had a positive impact on children's experiences. She has improved the selection of reading books to reflect the children's interests and has created more opportunities for the

youngest children to access resources independently. Strong partnerships with parents help the childminder to maintain continuity and consistency in children's care.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder provides engaging experiences that develop children's communication and understanding of the world well. She ably extends children's understanding through clear explanations and good questioning. For example, she encourages children to learn the meanings of words, such as 'signet', 'telescopic' and 'binoculars'. The childminder promotes children's mathematical expertise, such as when she inspires them to observe, identify, and count the different birds and wildlife they see in the garden. She reads children's favourite books and extends their learning. For example, she encourages them to build a 'cosy bed' for the animals they hear about with blankets and cardboard boxes. She monitors, assesses and shares children's achievements with parents appropriately.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder offers calm, reassuring guidance and praise. She suitably promotes children's hygiene and healthy lifestyles, such as when she explains the benefits of washing hands and eating different fruit. Children enjoy regular outings to parks and playgroups where they enjoy fresh air and exercise, and are able to socialise with others. They develop a love for nature, for example, as they explore the parks for leaves, feed the animals and visit the pet store to say 'hello' to the parrots. The youngest children make good progress in their physical development. The childminder regularly encourages them to pull themselves up and to steady themselves, ready for walking. Children know how to solve problems for themselves. For example, they worked out that they must use a telescopic duster instead of the ordinary one to reach the spider.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are confident, bright and inquisitive. They are happy and eager to join in with activities. Children acquire good communication, scientific, mathematical and early reading skills. They are well prepared for their future learning, including their move to school.
