p.1

The provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

n The childminder has not updated her paediatric first-aid training. This means she does not have a current paediatric first-aid certificate to meet the requirements of registration. n The childminder does not always use opportunities to further support children's understanding of shape, space and measure during spontaneous play. n Children have fewer opportunities to practice their developing interest in writing in different ways.

p.1

It has the following strengths

n Children establish strong bonds with the warm and caring childminder and are emotionally secure in her care. They are confident and well settled and demonstrate a shared sense of fun and enjoyment with the childminder. n The childminder knows the children very well. She observes them as they play and effectively tracks their development to identify any gaps in their learning. The childminder uses this information well to plan learning experiences that support what children need to learn next. n Children develop good communication and language skills. The childminder constantly talks with children as they play. They engage in meaningful conversations and the childminder makes sure she listens to and values children's contributions. n Partnerships with parents are good. The childminder keeps them regularly updated about their child's care, learning and progress. Parents are highly complimentary about

She observed the interactions between the childminder and children and discussed children's learning and their progress. n The inspector looked at a range of documents with the childminder, including policies, evidence of suitability of household members, and observation and assessment documentation. n The inspector discussed the childminder's self-evaluation. n The inspector took account of the written views of parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder has not renewed her paediatric first-aid certificate. This means she is not meeting this aspect of the requirements of her registration. However, she is very aware of her role and responsibility to safeguard children. The childminder conducts regular risk assessments of her setting and ensures that children play in a safe and secure environment. She keeps her safeguarding knowledge up to date through training and research. The childminder has a thorough understanding of what action to take should she be concerned about a child in her care. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder works closely with a group of childminders in the area. They support each other and regularly share ideas and good practice to help develop their skills and further improve the outcomes for children. The childminder has established links with other settings where children also attend, to promote a complementary approach to their care

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder is experienced and qualified. She has a good understanding of the different ways children learn and develop, and takes this into account when providing learning experiences. Activities, resources and equipment reflect children's individual interests and abilities. For example, children enjoy using their imagination in role play. They count as they stick 'spots' on their dolls, and comment 'that they are poorly and will need some medicine'. Children make connections in their learning. They link this to a song that they have recently learnt with the childminder, and confidently sing about 'Miss Polly' who had a 'dolly who was sick, sick, sick'. Children enjoy craft activities and develop their physical skills and hand-to-eye coordination as they handle small objects, such as stickers and sequins.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The lack of an up-to-date paediatric first-aid certificate and training, means that children's welfare cannot be fully assured. The childminder gets to know children and their families very well. They regularly share information to help ensure that children's individual needs continue to be met. The childminder is a good role model. She sets clear and realistic boundaries and children respond well to her calm and positive approach. Children learn to follow rules and behave well. They go on regular outings with the childminder, such as to playgroups, garden centres, parks and shops. Children develop good social skills and learn about the local community where they live.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children show a strong sense of belonging in the setting. They are articulate and are confident to express themselves and their ideas. They focus well on their chosen activities and develop a positive attitude to their learning. Children are independent and take responsibilities for their own self-care and environment. For example, they find their slippers and carefully place their shoes safely to one side. Children are developing the important skills that they need for their eventual move on to school.
