p.1

The provision is good

n The childminder creates a warm, welcoming and safe environment. She carefully checks her home to make sure that it is suitable for children to play and learn in. n The childminder's sensitive interactions help new children to settle quickly. She is calm and responsive, which supports children to build trust and form close attachments to her. n The childminder supports children's early language and communication skills well. She models vocabulary as she joins in with their play and helps children to learn new words. n The childminder is a good role model. She gently helps very young children to understand expectations for good behaviour. For example, she explains the importance of sitting at the table to eat at snack time. n Children build on their good physical skills and enjoy regular opportunities to be active in the local park. They are developing good coordination and competently feed themselves.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

n The childminder does not make the most effective use of the self-evaluation and monitoring processes to consider ways that ambitiously raise the standard to outstanding. n Occasionally, the childminder does not give children enough time or space to explore and play with the resources that interest them.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

n strengthen the use of the self-evaluation and monitoring processes to increase the potential to deliver the highest quality provision and excellent outcomes for children n give children more time and space to explore resources and materials to their satisfaction.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector observed the quality of teaching and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. n The inspector observed a planned activity and evaluated this with the childminder. n The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder and looked at relevant documentation. n The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback provided.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder's training in safeguarding is up to date and she has a good awareness of the possible signs of abuse and neglect. She is familiar with the child protection procedures to follow if she has any concerns about a child in her care. The childminder has addressed the recommendations from her previous inspection successfully. For example, she now has clear and effective lines of communication with parents and they regularly share what they know their child can do at home. Parents value the service that the childminder provides. They comment that she, 'Looks after children as if they were her own'. The childminder updates her knowledge of early years regularly. She meets with other childminders to share ideas and good practice.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder works closely with parents to gain a clear knowledge of children's starting points. She uses this information effectively to plan activities that support children's development and help them make good progress. The childminder skilfully engages in children's play to extend their learning. She models play which generates new ideas and learning experiences for the children. For example, the children and childminder laugh in surprise at the different sounds they can make when talking into a plastic beaker. The childminder uses opportunities to support children's mathematical learning. She uses mathematical language and encourages their early counting skills when reading books with children.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are happy and settled in the childminder's care. They explore the environment with confidence and show a natural curiosity in their surroundings and the people within it. Children behave well and listen to the childminder. They enjoy regular visits to the park and have good opportunities to socialise with other children outside of the setting. The childminder's sensitive encouragement and praise help children to develop independence in their play and a positive approach to learning.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Very young children display mathematical skills as they solve problems by trial and error. For example, they explore what size objects will fit into a pot. Children begin to communicate their needs and wants with confidence and use new words that they have learned. They develop early writing skills, making marks in sensory materials. Children show confidence in their own abilities and initiate friendships with new people. Children are gaining the key skills that prepare them for their future learning.
