p.1

The provision is good

n The provider and staff have close partnership working with the host school. For example, information is regularly exchanged to help the staff plan so they can offer children complementary activities and meet their individual needs. n The provider has developed effective systems for regularly reviewing staff performance. For example, he holds regular meetings, observes staff and provides them with opportunities to reflect on their own practice and skills. n The enthusiastic staff have good relationships and interact well with the children. They talk together, become involved in activities and support children to practise new skills. n Children enjoy their time at the club. Staff provide a good range of activities and resources for children to explore and enjoy each day after a busy day at school. Resources and activities reflect the interests and preferences of those attending as staff consult children regularly. All children are keen to take part.

p.1

The provision is good

n Staff teach children to behave well and they are good role models for children. Staff are polite and cheerful, and children are kind and helpful. n Staff complete daily risk assessments to ensure the environment is safe and secure. They work together efficiently to supervise children closely and keep them safe. For example, staff carry radios to use to communicate as they move around the club.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

n On some occasions, staff do not always organise some routines and activities to ensure children are not disturbed in their play or have to wait for extended periods.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector observed children's interactions with staff and other children, and viewed the play areas and resources. n The inspector held discussions with the provider, and spoke with children and staff, at appropriate times throughout the inspection. n The inspector looked at a range of documentation, including staff suitability checks, and the club's policies and procedures. n The inspector conducted a joint observation of staff practice and discussed this with the provider. n The inspector took into account the views of parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. Staff are effectively deployed to ensure children are closely supervised at all times. The provider and staff have a good understanding of child protection matters and know how to report concerns about children's welfare. There are good arrangements for recruitment, induction and vetting procedures. These help new staff members to understand the expectations of their role. The provider encourages staff to access training to benefit children. For example, staff completing training in reflective practice in the early years have used their new knowledge effectively to support them in planning for children's experiences. The provider reflects on the quality of the provision well to make ongoing improvements. Parents, children and staff are encouraged to express their views and to offer ideas to extend and improve the service.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Staff provide a good range of activities and play resources for the children to participate in and enjoy. Children play an active role in helping to develop ideas for activities and are able to share their ideas using a suggestion box. Overall, children are well occupied and enjoy the activities on offer. For instance, children have great fun taking part in energetic games, such as dodging the 'poisoned bubbles' and creating 'bubble blizzards' using bubble making machines. Staff play alongside children and support them to extend their ideas in play. For instance, younger children relish taking part in imaginative play preparing for picnic parties for their friends to enjoy. Children enjoy taking part in creative activities, such as making detailed models of volcanos and snowmen using dough. Staff take an interest in their creations and talk to them about what they are making. Parents comment that staff are always enthusiastic and children always have

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Staff give children plenty of praise and encouragement. This supports their confidence and self-esteem effectively. Children develop healthy practices as part of their routines. For example, they know how they must wash their hands before they eat. Staff provide opportunities for children to learn about a healthy diet, such as through the nutritious snacks they provide. For example, they challenge children to use the widest possible variety of colours of fruit and vegetables on their plates. Children develop good levels of independence. For example, they take responsibility for clearing away their own plates and cups after snack time. Children play amicably together. They behave well and treat each other with respect. For example, older children fully include the younger ones in their play and conversations.
