p.1

The provision is good

n The childminder evaluates her practice well and regularly updates her skills and knowledge to improve outcomes for children. n The childminder provides a well-organised, well-resourced, safe and welcoming home environment for children. She is vigilant and dedicated to keeping children safe. n The childminder and her assistant regularly praise children and recognise their efforts, helping to boost their self-esteem and confidence. n Children feel welcome and emotionally secure in the childminder's care. The childminder is warm and caring towards them and is considerate of their individual needs. For example, she recognises when children are tired or hungry. n The childminder and her assistant recognise the need to be good role models to help children manage their behaviour and develop friendships. Children behave well, share toys and play together harmoniously. n The childminder plans a range of interesting activities to engage children after their day

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

n The childminder does not consistently support children's developing independence skills. For example, she does not encourage children to manage some tasks for themselves, such as cutting up their own food.

Inspection activities n The inspector spoke to children during the inspection and observed them at play. n The inspector took account of the views of parents spoken to on the day of the inspection and from written feedback provided. n The inspector talked to the childminder about how she evaluates her practice. n The inspector viewed the areas of the premises used for childminding and held discussions with the childminder and her assistant.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder is able to recognise the signs that a child may be at risk of harm. She knows whom to share information with about any concerns that she may have about a child's welfare. The childminder and her assistant maintain a safe and secure environment for children to play and learn. The childminder reflects on her practice well and effectively monitors the practice of her assistant. Her evaluations inform accurate self-assessment. This helps to ensure the needs of children and their parents are fully supported. The childminder keeps up to date with essential training, such as safeguarding and first aid.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The experienced childminder provides children with a wide variety of materials and a range of books to give them opportunities to develop their creative and literacy skills. The childminder is aware of children's topics at school and readily offers support with homework. She plans a number of activities to stimulate children's natural curiosity. For example, children enjoy using chalk and brooms to explore colour, space and texture. The childminder complements children's learning by providing a good range of technological resources. For instance, she offers cameras, computer tablets and speakers to support children with homework and other activities. The childminder encourages children to engage in play in imaginative ways. For example, older children teach younger children imaginative ball games. The childminder evaluates the activities she provides and plans for children's learning and interests effectively. For example, children

learn about cultural events throughout the year such as St Piran's Day and Chinese New Year.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children engage well with one another and develop skills that provide a strong foundation for building relationships at school. The presence of older children benefits the learning and development of younger children. For example, older children often come up with imaginative ways to change or make up games, and the childminder supports and encourages this at every opportunity, within a safe, nurturing environment. Children's emotional and social development is highly valued. Children are settled and secure and, as a result, their behaviour is good. The childminder provides healthy and nutritious home-cooked meals along with fresh fruit and home-made cakes which the children enjoy.
