This inspection: Good 2

Previous inspection: Good 2 Effectiveness of leadership and management Good 2 Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Good 2 Personal development, behaviour and welfare Good 2 Outcomes for children Good 2

p.1

The provision is good

n The childminder recognises that children learn in different ways. For example, she provides many opportunities for children who prefer to learn outside to visit woods, parks and other local attractions to help support their progress. n Parents speak highly of the childminder. This is reflected in the many years she cares for children and their siblings. n The childminder values feedback from children, parents and other childminders to help her continually improve her provision. n Children form close relationships with the childminder. They giggle when she acts out familiar rhymes with them and respond well to her questions and requests.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

n The childminder does not provide a wide range of learning opportunities through adult- prepared activities that have a sharp focus on children's next steps in learning.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

n review and adjust the balance between children's self-chosen activities and those, which are adult-prepared, taking into account children's next steps in learning.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector observed activities inside the childminder's home. She spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection. n The inspector assessed the quality of teaching and spoke with the childminder about the impact on children's learning. n The inspector checked the evidence of the suitability of the childminder and other household members. She looked at a range of documents, including the safeguarding policy and children's records. n The inspector read questionnaires completed by parents. She took their views into consideration.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder effectively follows the procedures she has to help her keep children safe. She knows how to report any concerns she has about children's welfare. The childminder seeks to enhance her professional knowledge. For example, she attends courses that are relevant to the age and stage of development that she cares for. The childminder considers ways to effectively meet all her statutory requirements. For example, she has adapted and enhanced the way she monitors children's progress.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder encourages children to try new tasks. She shows them how to hold scissors and praises them as they attempt to cut paper, helping children to persevere and succeed. Children enjoy selecting toys and equipment that they like. They play alongside others and are happy to share the toys and equipment. The childminder takes children to mix in organised groups, helping them strengthen their social skills even further. Children think through answers to the questions the childminder asks them. For example, they consider what objects are a certain shape. This helps to strengthen their skills in mathematics.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Before children start in her care, the childminder gathers key information from parents, such as daily routines and preferences. Children visit for short periods before they start attending on a regular basis. This helps children to familiarise themselves with the environment and childminder. She encourages parents to provide a nutritious packed lunch for their children. She talks to the children about their food, helping to promote healthy lifestyle choices. Children behave well. They accept the simple rules and respond well to the childminder's requests.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are motivated and enthusiastic. They ask questions and share their own ideas and thoughts. As children grow, they begin to recognise number and letters and understand the concept of size. Children show their independence in self-care tasks, such as washing their hands. Through conversations with the childminder, children become emotionally prepared for future moves to pre-school and school. This helps make the transition as smooth as possible. When the time comes, children are ready to move on to the next stage in their learning and development.
