The childminder is supportive and interacts well with children. He plans stimulating experiences that support and extend children's learning and development. The childminder uses his observation and assessment system effectively to understand and monitor children's level of achievement. He knows children very well and this helps him to provide activities based on what children need to learn next. The childminder promotes mathematical skills well. For example, children enjoy completing number puzzles and sorting numbered blocks into the correct order. Children develop a love of stories as they choose books for the childminder to share with them.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are very happy and settled in the home-from-home environment. The childminder's warmth and praise helps to promote children's self-esteem and confidence. He takes children on regular trips out to develop their understanding of the local community. For example, they visit local parks or shops. The childminder helps children to learn about road safety and the importance of using safe procedures to cross roads. The childminder supports healthy lifestyles well. Children enjoy nutritious food and have lots of opportunities to play in the fresh air outdoors. The childminder helps children to become independent. For example, they go to the toilet independently and tidy away toys when they have finished with them.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are highly motivated to play and learn. Strong mathematical skills are emerging and children count, sort and match items as they play. They put numbers in order and are keen to solve more complex puzzles. Children learn to value and respect each other's needs. For example, they are kind to their friends as they learn to share and take turns when playing games and using resources. Children are gaining all of the key skills to establish firm foundations for the next stage of their learning, including moving on to school.
