The provision is good

n The qualified and experienced childminder works effectively with her assistant to provide a good-quality service. She organises the bright and inviting learning environment well and provides a wide range of activities and resources which interest and engage the children. n The childminder has a good understanding of how children learn and develop. She regularly observes children's play and carefully monitors their progress to identify what they need to learn next. n The childminder supports children's enjoyment of healthy lifestyles well. She works with parents to ensure the meals they provide for children are balanced and nutritious. Children have lots of opportunities to be physically active. For example, they enjoy demonstrating their dance moves and practise climbing in the childminder's garden. n Children develop a keen interest in books and enjoy listening to stories. Babies learn to handle books and turn the pages with care. Children memorise passages from their

favourite stories and enjoy demonstrating their 'reading' by reciting these.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

n The childminder does not use all opportunities to share her plans for children's future learning with their parents to support greater continuity between the home and the setting. n The childminder sometimes misses opportunities to help children build on their personal care skills during daily routines.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management is good

The childminder supervises her assistant well to make certain her practice is consistently developing and she understands how to keep children safe. She ensures that they attend regular training and continue to build on their professional knowledge and skills. For example, they have introduced a wider range of strategies to support children's language development. The childminder reflects on the quality of her service and seeks feedback from parents and her assistant to help her review her provision. She makes effective plans to improve children's learning outcomes. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder knows the signs which might indicate that a child is at risk from harm and how to report any concerns about children's welfare.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The standard of teaching is consistently good. The childminder recognises when she should intervene to support children's learning and when to allow time for them to develop their own ideas. For example, during a planting activity, younger children became interested in filling pots with soil. The childminder supported this by providing additional containers and soil to encourage their exploration. She enhanced the children's learning by introducing mathematical language to help them learn about numbers, size and volume. Children develop good hand-to-eye coordination as they explore activities, such as doing shape-sorters and puzzles and drawing.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children build close and trusting bonds with the childminder and her assistant. They demonstrate that they feel very safe and secure in the childminder's welcoming home. The childminder has developed effective relationships with schools that children attend. She ensures that there is a good exchange of information between herself, parents and teachers to support continuity in children's welfare and experiences. The childminder has a clear understanding of how to support children's behaviour. She uses gentle reminders to help them understand what is expected of them. For example, she encourages children to share the resources fairly. Children's behaviour is good.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are happy, active and confident learners. They make good progress from their starting points and develop a good range of skills and abilities to support the next stage in their learning, including being ready for school. Children show high levels of concentration and perseverance as they play. For example, they work hard to fit together the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle or to thread beads onto a lace. They show very good language and communication skills and are confident to share their thoughts, ideas and feelings with adults and other children.
