Effectiveness of leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of child protection and knows what to do should she have a concern. Robust policies and procedures help to ensure children are safe. For example, thorough risk assessments for the home and outings help to ensure that children remain safe and secure. The childminder consistently monitors children's progress and supports parents to help them target and address gaps in children's development and learning. She uses professional development effectively, to help improve her practice. For example, she is working on developing the outdoor area to enhance children's enjoyment and physical development further.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder skilfully uses her observations of children's progress to plan for their next steps in learning, and she follows their interests. She builds on young children's language and literacy skills effectively. For example, she changes the words in songs and stories to include 'princess' and 'dragon' for those children who show a keen interest in imaginary role play. The childminder supports children to learn about mathematics. For example, toddlers use their fingers and other props to show the numbers they are counting. She supports children very well to build on their understanding of the world. For example, she takes children to playgroups and activities in the local community. This helps children to become aware of different people, and how to treat everyone with equal respect. The childminder allows children to build on their physical skills and take appropriate risks. For instance, toddlers learn which slides they can attempt to climb in
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder is affectionate and attentive to children's individual needs. She effectively helps children to develop their confidence in social situations and to gain an awareness of how to stay safe when out, such as when they talk about road safety. The childminder takes time to ensure that children have an understanding of rules and teaches them to think about how their actions may affect others. Children are polite and considerate, and they form very close emotional bonds with the childminder. Overall, she supports children to make their own decisions, such as giving them a choice during mealtimes and encouraging them to 'have a go'. Children enjoy taking turns and readily share toys with each other.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children are curious and motivated to learn. They use simple technology in their play to build on their memory and problem-solving skills. Children listen and follow instructions well, and display a growing awareness of their own abilities to complete tasks. Children are progressing well and are well prepared for starting school.
