Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

The provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

n The childminder does not plan effectively to provide stimulating learning experiences that meet the individual needs of each child. n The childminder does not make consistently accurate assessments of children's development that identify gaps in learning. Therefore, children do not receive effective support to make the best progress in their learning and development. n The childminder does not help children to learn the reasons for eating good food or for drinking water. n The childminder does not review her practice rigorously enough to identify key weaknesses and to address these promptly.

p.1

It has the following strengths

n Children behave well and respond positively to the childminder's requests. For example, they wash their hands in preparation for snack and lunch. Children sit at the table and focus during their own play activities. n Children are happy in the childminder's care and they have opportunities to freely access a wide range of toys and resources. n Partnerships with parents are strong. The childminder includes parents in the initial assessments of their child's development and she obtains detailed information about children's needs.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities n The inspector had a tour of the premises with the childminder and discussed risk assessments. n The inspector looked at a sample of documents required for the smooth running of the childminder's provision. n The inspector carried out an observation on the quality on teaching during indoor activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector evaluated an activity with the childminder. n The inspector held discussions with the childminder, including the self-evaluation process. The inspector spoke with children at a convenient time. n The inspector spoke with parents and read written feedback from other parents and took account of their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder can recognise signs of possible abuse and neglect. She understands the procedures she should follow if she has any concerns about the welfare of a child in her care. The childminder carries out regular risk assessments of the premises and takes steps to minimise potential hazards to keep children safe. However, she does not review the quality of her practice with equal rigour. The childminder does not identify key weaknesses in her practice to raise the quality to a higher level to help children make good progress in all areas of learning. The childminder regularly shares information with parents about children's experiences. She works well with parents to implement children's individual routines and to meet their care needs.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

Teaching is adequate. The childminder does not always plan well to achieve the learning intentions she includes for each child. She does not make use of all opportunities to adapt learning activities to promote the development of younger children. Although the childminder carries out regular observations of children's play activities, she does not always assess the stage of their development correctly. This means that, at times, the next steps are not precise. Nevertheless, children have time to engage in their play. They enjoy making marks in paint and the childminder provides additional resources, so that they are able to experiment with the paint. The childminder offers praise when children recognise colours and shapes and she encourages them to make some decisions that reflect their preferences. For example, children make patterns of different shapes. There is good interaction with the children and she provides an appropriate selection of

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Children do not receive the best support in all areas of learning. This means that they do not develop a wide range of appropriate skills to underpin their personal development. However, children are at ease in the childminder's home and they are developing independence skills. For example, toddlers feed themselves and older children attend to their hygiene needs with minimal support. Children form strong bonds with the childminder. For example, younger children sit on her lap for emotional reassurance and older children ask for support as required. She promotes children's safety well. She stores resources appropriately and toddlers sit in a highchair with secured reins for snack and meals.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Overall, children are not making the progress they are capable of in all areas of learning. However, they are developing some skills in preparation for moving on to school. Children develop skills in early literacy and numeracy, and are beginning to develop the social skills to mix in large groups away from the childminder's home. They learn to share and to make decisions during play activities.
