Outcomes for children Requires improvement
p.1
The provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:
n The childminder does not always make accurate assessments of children's learning. Next steps in children's development are not always precisely identified and children are not consistently supported to make the best possible progress. n The childminder does not always complete the progress check for children aged between two and three years in a timely manner or share relevant information about children's development with parents. n The childminder does not keep a record of children's names and their daily hours of attendance. n The childminder does not monitor the quality of her practice well enough to identify and swiftly address any weaknesses in her practice.
p.1
It has the following strengths
n Children are happy and confident to explore their environment. The childminder provides a range of accessible toys to support children's independence and self-chosen play. n The childminder establishes warm and caring relationships with the children. They enjoy spending time with her and are happy to go to her for cuddles and comfort, which helps them to feel secure. n The childminder promotes children's mathematical development. She encourages children to count, recognise different shapes and make comparisons about shape and size. n The childminder promotes children's social skills. For example, she makes use of local facilities, such as 'stay-and-play' groups to enhance children's learning experiences.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
Inspection activities n The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. n The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder and spoke with children during the inspection. n The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household. n The inspector took account of the views of parents from feedback provided by the childminder for the inspection.
p.2
Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a suitable knowledge of the signs and symptoms of abuse and understands how to report any concerns about the welfare of a child in her care. She undertakes regular child protection training to keep her knowledge up to date. However, the childminder does not hold all the required information about the children she cares for. She does not keep an accurate record of the names of children being cared for on the premises or their hours of attendance. The childminder does not consistently review all children's progress between the ages of two and three years. She does not provide parents with a written summary of their children's development during this time. Consequently, she does not identify children's strengths or where their progress may be less than expected. Although the childminder reflects on some aspects of her provision, her self-evaluation is not successful in identifying and

addressing all weaknesses in her practice.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement
Children enjoy making pictures using a range of resources and are eager to show their art work to visitors. The childminder plays alongside the children and encourages them to talk about what they are doing. She promotes children's language and communication skills suitable well. For example, she provides commentary and introduces new vocabulary as children play. The childminder speaks with parents daily and shares information with them about their child's care and the activities they take part in. However, she does not always use accurate assessments of children's learning to help her plan activities that continually build on what children already know and can do.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement
The childminder provides plenty of opportunities for children to practise their physical skills. Children particularly enjoy playing in the childminders garden. They confidently ride on wheeled toys, negotiating obstacles and demonstrating their coordination skills. The childminder works with parents to ensure children are provided with healthy food options in their lunch boxes and promotes children's good hygiene routines. Children demonstrate positive behaviour. The childminder praises children's efforts and her calm approach helps children to learn what is expected of them. However, weaknesses in assessment and planning mean that some activities do not provide sufficient challenge to enhance children's learning.
p.3
Outcomes for children require improvement
Children are confident and enjoy exploring and initiating their own play. They communicate well with the childminder, visitors and their peers. However, weaknesses in assessment mean that children do not always make the progress of which they are capable of achieving. Nevertheless, children do develop some of the skills they need to prepare for their next stage in learning and their eventual move on to pre-school or school.
