p.2
Effectiveness of leadership and management requires improvement
The childminder has failed to notify Ofsted of an assistant who regularly works with her on the premises. However, the assistant has a Disclosure and Barring Service check and is well supervised when working with children. The childminder ensures that her assistants attend mandatory training, such as first aid and child protection. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder demonstrates a secure understanding of the signs of abuse. She understands how to report any concerns. Since the last inspection, the childminder has attended further training on monitoring the work of her assistants. She gives them regular feedback about their practice. Together, they identify professional development opportunities to benefit the children they care for. The childminder identifies ways to improve her provision. For instance, she installed tyres in the outdoor area to offer children a variety of ways to climb and balance.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
Children of different ages show good levels of interest in their learning, for example, as they explore a 'treasure basket' full of natural objects. Babies enjoy exploring the different textures, while older children show good imagination, such as using a whisk and wooden rings to create a 'chocolate cake'. The childminder and her assistants choose resources to help young babies to focus on objects and develop their strength. Children enjoy exploring books, dressing up and playing outside in the well-planned garden. Children have good opportunities to develop their coordination and early writing skills. For example, they carefully poke straws through holes in flowerpots and make marks with a range of materials. The childminder involves parents in children's learning. They contribute to assessments and share information about their child's interests.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement
The identified weakness in leadership and management has the potential to affect children's welfare. However, the childminder demonstrates a commitment to keeping children safe. She carries out daily checks of her home and ensures that the premises are secure. Babies settle well when they first start in the childminder's care. The childminder works with parents to find out babies routines and preferences. She understands that very young babies need close contact with their carers and regularly offers opportunities for this with lots of cuddles and reassurance. The childminder notices when children wish to play outside and gives them opportunities for exercise in the large garden.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Young babies develop their social awareness through eye contact and facial expressions, showing interest in the people around them and offering smiles to familiar adults. Older babies explore and pull themselves up to standing with support. Toddlers develop their confidence and communicate their preferred activities. Pre-school children show good levels of concentration and freely explore materials. Children of all ages enjoy listening to stories and rhymes. Parents give very good feedback about the childminder's service. They say she provides a 'great setting' and the childminder, her co-childminder and assistants make a 'lovely team'.
